So you can use DT swiss nipples in 16mm lenght which allow you to use use spokes that are 2mm shorter. The length of the nipple body does not represent the extra thread lenght. 14mm has 1mm extra thread and 16mm has 2mm extra.
On that note , I can custom cut you Sapim race and Sapim sprint in silver from blanks in 0.5mm increments:)

Nice one. I'll measure my ERD now I have my rims and check my figures then PM you.

In regard to the above, are A23 still the go to choice for wide rim-braked on a non-fancy budget?

DT R460 seems to be more favoured

Measuring ERD: am I doing it right?
2 x 266mm spokes screwed in to the bottom of slot on the top of the nipples+ 74mm from caliper - 2 x 1mm radii of each spoke = 604mm. 1mm shorter than the Strans official figure.
Also sounds like nipple washers might be prudent (drive side only?). Do I add this on to the ERD or final spoke length? Probably near enough same effect right?

A23 are genuinely the worst rim ever

Hhhmmm, contentious. There are rims I'd rather have, but the A23s on my factory Powertap wheels have behaved themselves perfectly well. Definitely not the worst rims that I've ever used.

I also had them on a factory Powertap too and the combo was a disaster which is why Powertap dumped them ASAP. Noodly flexy rubbish unless you are climber build. For a 32 spoke rim they are shocking.

Climber I am not. All above opinions appreciated!

Thanks, I'll have a little hunt around. Those options look great but appear to be quite expensive / scarce...
@withered_preacher do they (sun?) still make the cr18?
-
• #6841
Weird. My experience is exactly the opposite. I hardly have a climber's physique - more puncheur/fat bastard depending on how polite you want to be - but I've ridden those wheels for 15 miles with an absolutely flat rear tyre (forgot my pump) and they shrugged it off no problem. Never needed truing, still running dead true after 4000 miles, mostly over roads which are so bad that one chap's saddle came off last time we raced a TT on them.

Sorry about that, on a quick search I couldn't find any either - maybe try VO Diagonale or Velocity Cliffhanger?
-
• #6843
Agree, no problem at all with A23 on Campag 32-spoke hubs, not the last word in sportiness but reliable

You're running against the tide asking for any of silver/rim brake/36H. Wanting all three and a budget price is a moon/stick scenario.
-
• #6846
Yeah, thought as much.. just wondering if someone had any hidden gems that I hadn't been able to find with my googling :)
-
• #6847
They look good, but I already have the hubs unfortunately.
Would prob be doing myself a favour if i ditch them and buy some with a lower spoke count.
-
• #6848
You could always save them for the next build right :)

What rims should I use for touring on a tandem (disc brakes)?
It has to be 26' and 36h, tyres will be around 2' - 2.15'. Candidates are:- DT Swiss 545, inner 21mm, single eyelet, 530g
- Mavic EX729, inner 29mm (!), single eyelet, 675g
- Ryde Andra CSS (rim brake), inner 19mm, single eyelet, 735g
- Ryde Sputnik, same as Andra but double eyelet
In an ideal world I'd like the inner width of the Mavic, the finish quality of the DT, and the touring cred of the Ryde. But hey.
Having trouble finding a disc rim with double eyelets, so I'm including rim brakes are on the list. Perhaps good to have more meat in them anyway? Or is that silly?

Ryde Andra CSS
Well, you definitely don't want to waste your money on the CSS version if you have disc brakes. I wouldn't worry too much about whether they have double, single, or no eyelets. They were a thing with old school tubular rims made by flattening soft thin walled aluminium tube, but anything extruded to final shape can have the wall thickness designed to suit from the outset. There's a wider version of the Andra which would probably be the first choice if your budget is tight. I'd also consider SUNringlé MTX 33 which is cheap for a welded rim. The DT 545 is obviously a bit narrow and maybe light, depending on your load, so I'd say the shortlist in ascending price order would be
Ryde Andra 40
SUNringlé MTX 33
Mavic EX729
I'm sure this has been answered before but @cycleclinic I've just bought an offset XR31T rim from your webshop.
When calculating spoke length using https://leonard.io/edd/ do I just enter 3mm in the OSB box?
Thank you
