• Going tubeless this weekend. Gravel king 38 on Pacenti sl23 are a bastard to get on, which I think is a good start. Was going to run tubes for a bit first but managed to pinch one of them getting the tyres on. Wouldn't fancy trying to mend a puncture with numb hands so no time like the present.

  • Rear is up and apparently holding air. Front won't seat though so I'm off to the hardware store to get supplies for a ghetto inflator. Fuck paying £50 for a new track pump.

  • Just took delivery of this, having a go next monday. There currently is blue Schwalbe rim tape on the rims, I'll probably want to take that off and clean the rims before applying Stan's yellow tape? And planning to inflate with a Topeak Joe Blow Sport II, and take them to work to use the compressor if that doesn't work. Anything I should know before embarking on this adventure?

  • I often find it’s worthwhile putting sealant in and running it around the tyre to help lubricate the bead slipping/ popping into place.

I used to be frightened about doing this in case of jizzy mess but it’s never happened to me.

  • In other news my bontrager charger pump is fucked. The hose attachment has snapped. Allegedly it’s a spare part but trek never have them in stock.

So yesterday I picked up an airshot from my local tyre supplier.

I think I may also be getting an air compressor for Xmas which would make all such things redundant. It might also be used for other air tools/paint guns etc.

  • I used a bit of soapy water, last pairs nothing at all. You can sit one side with a tube, get it out, put valve and the other one will sit easily.
Another thing that works is two laps of tape, real tight instead of going down the channel. Remove core and pump furiously, the pressure will sit the tire and the tape in place.

  • real tight instead of going down the channel.

What do you mean by this? The tape I used went right up to and slightly up the walls, is there a method where the rim beds are left clear?

Edit: I think I get what you mean, I did that, two laps tight and and extra bit round the valve after reading spotter's woes.

Finally got my front seated with the home brew airshot. Bit scary pumping it up to 80 psi, but it didn't flinch, could do with a better connecting hose though as that was losing quite a lot of air.

@dancing james I tried a bit of sealant, then a load of soapy water, but the air just wasn't getting in quick enough, even with the core removed.

  • Sometimes I have to resort to a Co2 cartridge. Also I have found when fitting tyres that are really tight like to a pacenti rim, thin var tape is needed. On other rims which the tyres are a losses as fit, a few layers of thicker stans is needed. If the fit is too tight the tyre won't inflate.

  • Tubeless is some kind of scam from pump makers isn't it?

  • I fitted all my tires so far with a £5 track pump. Takes a lot of patience sometimes

  • Well I have fitted all my (one) tyre(s) with a 5EU track pump (it was 10EU but I went halvies with mate). Still holding air. Still not ridden. #fml

  • Just a reminder not to attempt to inject sealant into a pumped up tyre. :D

  • Is it safe to use a TL tyre with an inner tube, on a non-TL rim?

It doesn't sit well around the valve.

  • No a Maxxis-something on a relatively narrow, no-brand rim.

  • Fucking punctures.

There seems to be a twilight zone where a hole can be too large to be sealed by the fluid, but too small to fit in an anchovy or a mushroom. I'm assuming I'm going to have to go old-school with a patch on the inside? FMT.

  • You can push a tyre worm in. You are meant to make the hole bigger with these. Just shove it in. Timidness is a real problem.

  • There's something really counter-intuitive about making a hole larger in order to fix it. Indeed, I spent a good 5 mins shoving the pointed tool through the once-small hole. Got the worm in accidentally pulled it out when trying to cut off the excess on the outside. Will have another attempt later once I get all the jizz cleaned up.

  • jam it in.

if not you can buy mushroom patches for putting inside the tyre

  • Bought them (on your recommendation a few pages back), but they're even more fiddly than the worms. Still, I have lots of back-up options now.

  • I want these, but that website hurts my eyes

  • Hutchinson Sector, any good?
Read mixed things especially about in the wet. Which is a bit odd as a Paris-Roubaix option. Being used at top higher pressure maybe?

I’ll be running them on Hope 20fives anyone know how the 28 comes up size wise?

  • They'll come up no bigger than 29mm. @umop3pisdn has them I think ?

  • Ok cool. Given how the 25s are on currently I should be ok for clearance then.
Now just need to know if they are any good.

  • I like them so far. Size up around 30mm but that's on 23mm internal rims. Fast rolling and fairly grippy, though they don't like greasy roads.
