  • I've hurt my hamstring and can't run the Brighton half. If anyone knows anyone who needs a ticket I have one spare.

  • sorry to hear that, am signed up for it as well. @GwGs fancy waiting for me at the finish line for about 45 minutes?

  • To run in it? I'd be keen as I've started running again and could do with something to aim towards. Or is that likely too soon?

  • Interesting article: http://amp.irishexaminer.com/sport/other-sports/opportunity-lost-what-happened-to-irelands-european-u23-cross-country-champions-465244.html?__twitter_impression=true

Foot still painful. Need to keep weight off it but work requires time on feet. Catch 22.

  • Nah, I'm out of shape at the moment.

  • First run since Sep 19th. Slow and grim but not a hint of pain from my foot.

Will slowly build back up to 30-40km a week and watch the pounds melt away flab around on my tortured body.

Also, new Garmin 935xt goodness. I like.

    (Selling my old Forerunner 920xt for £150: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/315233/ )

  • I'd be down for some Brighton action. Sorry to hear about the injury

  • It’s the last weekend in February. How far are you running at the moment?

  • It’s very frustrating - my own fault for trying to kick something high up without warming up!

  • So I decided entering Ennerdale and Wasdale was a good way to force me to train this year - 23m/7500ft, 21m/9000ft respectively.
    Death before DNF.

  • Oof! Does Wasdale include going over the top of Scafell Pike? I remember being at the top mid-hike, shivering whilst attempting to unwrap a Kendal mint cake, and seeing participants in the Borrowdale race appearing out of the mist, thinking to myself, "Never!" Anyway, good luck!

I've had a couple of rest days in an attempt to shrug off a cold. Feels like I'm just about there, so some hope of putting in a good show at the Kent county XC this afternoon at Brands Hatch. The long spikes are in, could be soft going. Any other XC action this weekend?

  • It does indeed. Now just got to figure out how to get 1-2000m of ascent into my weekly runs.
Lots of running up and down the hill outside my partner's flat and rerouting all my normal runs to squeeze in all the climbs!

  • Totes noob question guys: is the course marked on a fell run? Or is it orienteering? Or is it more like "you'll have to know the course to know you're running in the right place"

  • Don't lead.

    Simple.

  • Some are 'flagged', others use some identifiable paths etc. Others are free route choice. Some races have sections of each, e.g Boars Head (iirc) .

    FRA website useful resource.

  • Any other XC action this weekend?

G.Manc XC tomorrow but won't be starting. Enjoy Brands Hatch!

  • If the race is advertised as PM it means partially marked, but it doesn’t guarantee much.
Generally though, the shorter the race, the less nav required - people to follow etc.
You’re unlikely to get lost on most races but map and compass is pretty much always mandatory.
The longer a race, the more spread out the racers will be, making it easier to go off course. That said, following people is no guarantee either - been at plenty races where big groups have gone the wrong way.
For Ennerdale and Wasdale, I’m going to recce both routes - hopefully more than once each - because I know I’ll be at my physical limit so I won’t want the stress of uncertainty with the Nav side.

As for knowing where to go/best line to take etc, it varies from course to course. I gained a good few places on the Rydal Round (Fairfield Horseshoe), by taking the descent line with a big drop (3/4 metres of easy but vertical-ish downclimbing).

  • if you are my sort of pace you can follow everyone else!

6th place at reigate priory parkrun today after no running since Christmas day. my Achilles felt sore before, not too bad during but absolutely awful afterwards. there is a visible bump about 5cm up from the ankle. sounds like it's heel drop time for the next few weeks / months. boo

  • Lovely loop today in the winter sun.
Attached pic: this is usually a footpath, diversion meant I found a new way home and saw my gf on a run!

Knees are holding up better and better to running but hips are seizing up a bit. When I went to physio about my knees for cycling the guy said hip flexors were very tight so am working on stretching them.

  • No Pic? Seen route on Strava There's loads of little paths around the Eees & surrounds, lovely on a day like today.

  • Ah, the Rydal Round, my only fell race to date. @juanito stormed past me to show up my awful downhill form, during which I followed someone who looked like they knew where they were going, only to chichen out of hurtling down a cliff face he led me to!

Things went pretty well today, had the nagging feeling that the cold was still lingering, yet legs feeling nice and strong after a bit of unscheduled rest, and knew I was running well by being ahead of some runners I'd normally expect to be behind. Upshot was a very similar result to last year's race on the same course: 5th scorer for the club again, 2nd club overall again, exactly 10 seconds slower than last year. Something like 25th overall (23rd last year), 7.5 soft, undulating miles @ 5:40/m. Got handed the application form for Intercounties XC consideration - team of 9 to be selected based on county and Southern champs. Bit of a long shot depending on how many eligible runners opt out, but may as well go for a county vest!

  • I can't get forum upload to work on my phone, should be showing now, used imgur.
    Yeah it really was lovely!

  • My new year's plans for running more have been turned to shit by a horrible dose of flu. Every joint aches. Dreading getting back into it.

  • Anyone got a 3 day a week fast 5 km plan?

  • Run 2 days a week 5 km slowly 1 times fast. Or just do 3 runs a week fast. You blouse.
