Sounds like a dogs dinner - what are you trying to achieve?
-

9 speed chains are narrower internally than 8 speed
But there's a better than even chance that the sprockets will only be 2mm thick even on an 8-speed cassette. It's probably going to work in practice.

Rando hack with bin parts on a bike that only does PF30 bb.
So madhatters madness etc.
-
• #117980
I've run 9-speed chains on 8-speed cassettes ... it works.

Got disc wheels on eBay so destickered, fitted 160mm discs, Halo Hex skewers, rim tape, tyres and tubes.
Building a green Pinnacle Dolomite 4 for hack duties...

10 speed derailleur. 8 speed shifter, chain and cassette. 1x setup. All Shimano. This'll be fine right?

This'll be fine right?
As we said just two days ago, probably.

Ah cheers, should have read up thread. Will be a road not a mountain derailleur too which might help.
-
• #117987
yep, should work. 10x mtb derailleur wouldn't work btw.
-
• #117988
Cheers, have gone for a tiagra. Went for 10spd rather than 8 as it seems hard to find ones that can handle 32t or thereabouts sprockets in 8 speed, especially in silver.

• #117989
Careful, 4700 is the only exception to that rule, it has the same cable pull as 11 speed road stuff.
-
• #117990
Yeah I spotted that, went for 4601 so fingers crossed should be ok

should have read up
To be fair, I should have read the question properly. There's potentially an issue with running wide 8-speed chain through the skinny 10-speed pulley cage. It's quite likely that 10-speed chain will run happily on the 8-speed sprockets should this issue materialise.

• #117992
Will bear that in mind if that proves to be an issue, cheers

So I have been building the Pinnacle Dolomite 4 that I purchased on eBay with bits from the parts bin today (Sora 2x9 shifters & Tiagra FD RD Chainset).
The tapered disc forks are unfortunately damaged so I need to source some new one...

Alu crown? Could just be the carbon legs have moved a bit if so, needn't be terminal.
-

Would've scraped the colour of and checked closer if I was you. Might be what russ says.

@Thrust I will sand and cross check, but the crack goes all the way around the leg, not just on the inside.
@russmeyer Not sure the words moved a bit and carbon should be used in the same sentence...I paid £75 for the frameset on eBay and emailed the seller about the forks. He kindly offered a 50% refund so I can replace them for used ones (tapered, 45mm rake, clearance for 25mm tyres + mudguards, 21cm+ of steerer).
There was a lovely set of Specialized S-Work UD carbon disc forks on eBay before Christmas for £60 but they have sold unfortunately.
I will put a Wanted Ad - pretty sure @amey has some in his parts box.

soz, nothing :(

Same opinion as russmeyer.
The crown is aluminium and the blades are carbon. Look at the fork on the attached to see what I think the construction of the fork is like under the paint.
What you are seeing is the paint cracking at the joint line, as the the crack runs all the way around the fork, due to the difference in flexibility of the two materials.

New Year - New Teeth
I will sand down and report.
In the meantime, a bike shop has listed 10+ tapered forks on eBay, all brand new and ending in 3 days so I will follow and bid.
#CSB Some of them are the latest Giant steerer diameter which would mean new headset & new stem & thru axle so will stick to the 'standard' ones.
9 speed chains are narrower internally than 8 speed.
