• A sliding section between the hitch and the A-frame which operates mechanical drum brakes. I don't have a guide to towing and I've never read one - I just got on and did it - but I'll post some top tips when I'm in front of a computer with a keyboard. At the moment I'm in front of an open fire in a mountain top restaurant with amazing views and my third beer.

  • Yeah braked trailers are not without their disadvantages. Like having to reverse up a comedy steep alley blocked by a dump truck whilst towing a megaload of machine tools.

I'd opt for something heavy, with exceptional brakes and a lot of grunt.
    Range?

  • Range Rover V8s, of whatever flavour, are basically the ultimate towing vehicle. Mind you, my Impreza WRX did a damn fine job. There were a couple of times I was pressing on at a fair rate of knots, and wondered what stupid git was tailgating me, only to realise/remember it was the racer I could see in my rear view mirror.

  • Think some of the Mitsubishi 4x4, jeep cherokee and a few others that can tow the 3.5kg limits.

  • Landcruiser I’d have trouble getting a RR past the boss.
