  • Not sure if alias troll....

  • Members meeting tickets bought. Anyone else going other than @BRM ?

    I’m going Saturday.

  • Gotta be a troll. Who was that guy who got banned?

  • Not going for the weekend?

  • Not to piss on your chips but is that the right oil for the diff?

  • Yeah why?

    https://www.mx5parts.co.uk/differential-fully-synthetic-models-p-1589.html

Don't make me do it again, it smelt bad enough the first time.

  • Why is everyone changing the steering wheels in their fucking Porsches?

More money than sense? As a former Porsche owner, it does rather go with the territory.

  • You'll really, truly, hate what I'm thinking of doing next.

  • General Lee horns?

  • You'll really, truly, hate what I'm thinking of doing next.

    Do tell, gramps

  • Can anyone point me in the right direction for a guide on towing? An estate is probably on the horizon and I would like to know what I would need to legally tow the racer (say, 1000kg + a set of wheels).

    @danstuff

  • Not a dealer who knows what BMW enthusiasts are like.

  • Clutch freed by starting in gear. Relief.

  • It’s a veritable minefield. I towed the MX5 on a trailer with my E39 estate but I’m not sure if it was legal to or not. I didn’t ask the trailer rental but they didn’t stop me either and they had to inspect my licence to give me the trailer so who knows? There’s a thread on pistonheads where some guy who seems to be the guy to ask just replies to everyone who gives a scenario as to whether it’s ok or not.

  • Cheers dude. I think I’ve worked it out. Probably not.

Payload must be within trailer max limits. Trailer gross must be under car max, regardless of payload. Over 750kg must be braked.

I need a big estate and the smallest trailer I can.

An e class tows 2000kg. An a6 allroad tows 2600. But I’d feel a right wand driving one of them.

  • If only you knew someone with a Volvo estate for sale.

  • Ha. I’d genuinely love to own that car.

  • Maximum towing weight for the 850 is 1,600 kg, but that's braked- unbraked is 700kg.

In other news, I'm replacing the entire engine loom on the Volvo.

  • unbraked is 700kg

So you just need to shed 50kg from the racer.

    Carbon fibre bodywork?

  • Actually I don't know that.

  • Racer is minimum 830. You need to add the trailer weight too.

  • How the fuck does a braked trailer work, anyhoo?

  • IDK. The hitch-mounted bike carrier that I have has a light board, with indicators, brakes etc. It therefore gets the signal that I am braking via the electrical connection which could be used to operate the brakes on a trailer- although that would suggest a 12v operated hydraulic system, which sounds a bit odd.

  • A sliding section between the hitch and the A-frame which operates mechanical drum brakes. I don't have a guide to towing and I've never read one - I just got on and did it - but I'll post some top tips when I'm in front of a computer with a keyboard. At the moment I'm in front of an open fire in a mountain top restaurant with amazing views and my third beer.

  • Mines more or less the same I think, it's not quite enough for another car on a trailer, unless very simple trailer and very track car.
