what do I need to look at to make 6 speed 8 speed
Possibly space between the dropouts. On a road bike, 6-speed is 126mm (maybe even 120mm) and 8-speed is 130mm. Almost certainly a new hub, since 8-speed needs a wider freehub spline to fit compared with 6/7-speed, even assuming the 6-speed is a freehub. If it's a screw-on multiple freewheel, a longer axle plus some spacers and a slight re-dish will do it, usually I'd avoid 8-speed freewheels due to the excessive overhang from bearing to dropout, but that's not really such a problem if it's a child's bike.
