So, two things turned up today and I am coffee-freaking the fuck out.
One of which I ordered. One of which was a complete surprise from Mrs CYOA.
After lusting after a Technivorm for about 8 years she surprise-ordered me a KBGT 741 (without me asking or mentioning it to her, or, to my knowledge, without her stalking my posts here).
Pro-level wife.

Rightyho, looking to ditch the pact subscription and grind beans for my Bialetti myself except not really sure where to start. Looking for a decent grinder and advice where to buy beans if possible. Looking for a grinder which is well engineered to last a lifetime if possible! Thanks forum people, you're the best.

Electronic or manual grinder?

I used a Zass Turkish for years and it was fine, but a few weeks ago I received a new Helor 101 - night and day. It doesn't come cheap, but I'd stay in that range.

Excellent haul! I hope you get on well with the Technivorm. Best piece of coffee kit out there.

I'm happy with my Rancilio Rocky grinder and it's built like an absolute tank. Might be overkill for your needs though.

Hoffmann cafetiere recipe to the rescue today. 20g of Ancoats Santa Barbara to 300ml for 12 mins brew. Very tasty cup.

Really enjoying it so far but finding I'm getting through way more coffee than I was (which I thought was a lot). Easy 75g a day, sometimes 150. Also I perceive that I get less to drink in this. The water tank claims ten cups but I'm getting about 3 mugs out of it. Can't imagine what cups they're used to in the Netherlands!
But it is:- Fun.
- Easy.
- Very tasty.
- Very consistent.
- Fun.

Well those 4 points cover just about everything you can hope for, glad it’s going well.
Usually count on each gram of ground coffee retaining 2g of water after brewing, so if you go for 60g/l then you should yield about 880ml of brew which should do you for 4 regular mugs. Local culture tends to dictate how big a cup is innit.

Hang on, you are drinking 75g+ coffee a day? That’s a lot.

It's more than I'd previously been using in the French press which was roughly between 40 and 60g depending on the type of coffee. That was a 1 litre pot which I'd brew once or maybe twice a day. The technivorm I'm being a bit more 'official' about measurements and am doing the recommended amount for a full tank until I get used to the machine. Haven't yet worked out ratio for one cup and may try at some stage but figure the thermal carafe keeps it good for longer and it's less fuss (and fewer filter papers) to just make a full pot in the first place. As above it's about 3 mugs which I don't think is a lot to consume though my bank balance will shortly suggest otherwise.
If coffee came in multiples of 75g I'd be a much happier, more well rounded individual.

A side note. Generally if I do more than one brew of 75 it's because I make a pot for myself in the morning and then make a pot when someone comes round later. Very rarely will I make 2 pots for myself.

Mghhhnnghh!!! -

Haha [shakes].
I think I’ve got a decent tolerance, but I don’t think I could take more than around 35g in one day.

I usually have about 60g a day, filter coffee in any format, French press, aeropress, V60, etc is pretty quaffable.
If I’m working from home I’ll make a litre in the French press and drink it before lunchtime no problem.

Addicts!

I thought my 40g/day was a bit high...

• #14024
Doesn’t it all depend on method of extraction?
-
• #14025
Presume a graph exists showing different quantities per extraction method and whether caffeine varies between them etc?
Did the Hoffmann cafetiere recipe early - really good!
