Is he anti-dive watch? If not then there’s the SKX013 at 38mm. I have one, it wears more like 36mm, it’s probably my favourite watch. Buy it on a bracelet or rubber, but mix it up with straps and NATOs:

^Maybe a tad too much for his first...

Timefactors not taking orders at the moment. Recommended retailer for a standard black NATO?

Thanks. Pretty much as I guessed. It's been on my wrist and I've been lazy so no real traumatic swings or knocks.
I was thinking it could be from not removing it the last few days and using the shoe finisher. The vibrations from the rough band and polishing wheel are somewhat strong. It could also be I set it a couple minutes ahead of iphone time and forgot.
Will keep an eye on it.

That's nice, but for that kind of money? Does it have a GS movement or something?
-
• #24861
The 8L35 movement in the SLA017 is an undecorated version of the GS 9s55 movement.

What kind of a spunk muppet pays £3,199 for a Seiko?
Especially when it looks like a £99 jobbie.
-
• #24863
Less of a spunk Muppet who pays £5k for a Rolex because it has the word Rolex on the dial.

The sort of people that aren't brand snobs and vanity driven on looks.
Grand seiko have the finest movements on the market short of some one like r.w.smith.
Thankfully most people in the market for top end watches in the core markets are brand driven and won t buy a seiko at that price, and thus they will stay ultra rare, And for a watch connoisseur they will probably end up as a good investment. -

Worth pointing out that the skx013 is quite a thick / high watch - same as skx007.
I've come to really like mine, but imo I don't think it works well with things like suit shirts.

Not quite the same but less pricey

A 5K Rolex will still retain most if not all its value or in some cases make money over time. You wont be able to give a 3K seiko away.
-
• #24868
Can't argue with that. But then again, for most people a watch is bought to be worn and enjoyed. Not shown off and sold on.
-
• #24869
Sorry but a massive over generalization. I deal with a lot of collectors who certainly don't buy on "Vanity" , but in some cases pay an extraordinary amount of money for something old and almost battered . None of my or any of my counterparts in any of our other showrooms have anybody who collect Seiko .
People don't buy Omega just because it's an Omega, they buy it for what the brand heritage represents. There's a lot of love on here for moonwatch and thats a great deal less flashy than any of the Grand seiko I have seen of late.
As for investment potential, Fucking hell don't make me laugh.
I'm with Senor_Bear on this . -

For all of you other Brand Junkies I bought this in pre owned today. Very lovely Explorer 2 box and papers from 2015.

It's nice enough, but do you have anything Japanese, perhaps by Seiko?
-
• #24873
So ugly, why would anyone?
-
• #24874
Especially when you could buy one of these instead
/trollface etc
-
• #24875
Actually, you can't buy one of those instead. They only made 21 of them and they change hands for $100k if you are lucky enough to find one for sale.
Hamilton Khaki Field Officer hand-winder at 38mm seems to fit the bill:
£295
Or a Smiths PRS-29A at 36mm from Timefactors:
£345
