You can never say for sure, can you.
I think he's raced quite lightly over the last month or so, partly so he can rest but also so he can do some proper training rather than racing twice every weekend then spending most of the week recovering from that and preparing for the next race weekend. It's not like he's been going like a bag of spanners, it's just that MVDP has been in imperious form for most of this season, which has made Van Aert look pedestrian in comparison.
I also have a theory, that I need to validate at some point, that the way to beat MVDP is to get ahead of him early in the race, rather than letting him dictate, then he'll make mistakes as he tries to get back on terms and his head metaphorically drops.
