I suspect the Cakists would carry the day and May knows that she'd then have to go to the EU and ask for full single market access with none of the concomitant commitments - and get laughed out of the negotiating room.
That needs to happen, has to happen for the Cakists to be forced to confront reality, but my suspicion is that that is best done as close to the cliff edge as possible in order to give them no time to come up with a plan b.
