I have always felt that part of the point of the G3 spoke pattern was the aesthetics
Yes, and I quite like it on the rear wheels when the flange size and spoke spacing makes the 3 spokes parallel with one another in side elevation - it draws attention to the 2:1 lacing and true tangential drive side spokes. On the front, though, it just draws attention to the fact that marketing got the better of engineering.

Interesting, thanks for the answer! Could there be marginal aerodynamic gains on the front wheel? Tastes differ, I have my own guilty pleasures like the mavic starfish and look ergostem.

@fussballclub thanks Ludwig.
So it seems that the issue is the lack of straight line from stem, across bar shoulders to hoods.
I see that you have that line perfect, whereas mine is a bit skewiff. I am happy to ride and see how I go, replacing bars in the future if I need or want to.
Part of the ethos of this build is learning. As with the cables being taped and cut too early, making the mistake and then rectifying it has etched the lesson more firmly into my brain that just taking pre-hoc advice.
As long as it's not too dumb (blue tyres, drops pointing at the chainring) I would rather eat my own dog food and then adapt.
So, just look forward to telling me that you told-me-so, come spring and the first decent length rides on this bike.
If you are canny, you could buy those Nitto bars, put them in your cupboard and then sell them to me next year for a small profit....

Oh and thanks to @mdcc_tester as well. Always a mine of info and you held back on being tooooo scathing!

I've got some acetone arriving in the post over the next day or two if you want to borrow to go at those rims.
-
• #334
How does that process work? Do you rip the stickers off first and then remove the residue with acetone or go straight in with the nail polish remover?
-
• #335
I done my wheels before warm up the rim with the old hair dryer then peel sticker in one go while warming up the sticker then finish off with acetone

believe mashton will be taking it

Don't let Ludwig see the transition on that!
Thanks for the tips, I'll probably have a go soon.
-
• #339
@mashton - your transition can't look like this photo. Because you have old skool bars.
On bars, the reason bars are like they are now is because they are more comfortable. One of the downsides is its really hard to get modern compact drops into old skool stems, but you have bought a stem that makes this easy!
Get some modern compact drops in 26.0. Deda piega are cheap, but only in black. Previous posters have pointed out you can polish/strip the key section with moderate ease.
Alternatively Soma highway 1.
Do it. It's the joint most important part for comfort along with saddle and will make a big difference.

I almost definitely will do.
Next year.

And he'll be right to do so!

Sorry, that sounded glib.
As I said up there ^^^ I'd rather live my mistake, viscerally understand the consequences and then adapt and change.
These bars and this transition won't kill me, (or get me totally sledged to death by you lot), but they should a) make the bike rideable and b) teach me something.

I ride mine like that. Very comfy.
All this nonsense people are talking! As if everyone rode round in the 90s with backs about to break.

Thanks!

Have you shrunk?

Blimey the rear brake cable section is a bit tight on your Cinelli.
Winky Face.

• #349
Awww cheers! :)
The compact drops on (my) Ron Cooper are the Nitto M106 in the Planet X link, although I see PX only have the 26.0 clamp size available in black. So much more comfortable than the old Cinelli bars on there previously - both on the hoods and in the drops - but I know that's a personal thing.

It's built!
Picked up the Nitto seatpost from @fidbod this evening. Thanks!
Unfortunately, the seatpost bolt is too long so I can't clamp it properly. Another mistake made: buy a bolt that is shorter than the OD of the clamp, not the same size as it. So a coke can shim is in place til the 19mm bolt is sourced.
Went round the block, adjusted gear indexing and saddle height then did my first ever drop bar taping. It went pretty well. As you can see from the pic, I had to put some blue tape on, in honour of this thread.
Not the best light for photos. But it's what I have right now.

What does this even mean?
Oh and piss off.
