• Cycling home up Holloway Road last night I noticed 20mph signs on the road and at the side of the road. Not that anyone drives anywhere near that speed except for in the camera zones. Then I wondered, have these signs always been there, has it always been 20mph on this stretch of the Holloway Road?

I have come to the conclusion that the average motorist is physically incapable of driving at this speed :(

Driver behaviour is obviously the main problem, but I've also been told that car gearing isn't set up to have a convenient gear for 20mph. This may be nonsense, but as a non-driver I wouldn't have the foggiest if it's true or not.

  • I've been told the same. My partner says my 2005 fabia is set up really badly for driving comfortably at low speeds but more modern cars are more capable.

The problem as far as I can tell is that driving below 20mph in second gear makes the engine sound a bit whizzy. Changing to third whilst remaining below 20mph the engine sounds like it's struggling / might stall unless you speed up a bit.

  • There's probably some truth to it because cars tend to be a bit peaky in 1st and 2nd so drivers with poor throttle control (LOL... ie. everyone) are likely find it harder to sit at 20 compared to say 40. "Oh, it's a bit annoying to hold my foot still here" is a pretty shit reason though.
