  • Getting LP envy.

Where's a good place to advertise for tasty musicians? I want to find a rhythm section (drums and bass) to see how my stuff sounds with telecaster clang and fuzz

  • My LP special DC is ace. Best guitar I've ever played. Just need more opportunity to play it louder!

  • Ugh... I played my Jag through that rig up there ^^ at rehearsal a few months ago, it was one of the most depressing times I've ever had in a practice room... New guitar, couldn't get a decent sound, too loud, too clean, too fuzzy, ugh... Wish I'd had my Twin with me, even the AC15 would've been better...

The lesson? Everyone should buy a Les Paul...

  • An LP through a Twin Reverb is a superb sound. Cross those streams.

  • Possibly my favourite sound ever...

  • Great responses! Thanks guys.

I am very very keen to get one. I've just paid off credit card 1 of 3 and I've promised myself a Les Paul when I've done them all. Roll on 2018!

  • I've a Cornell Tweed. LP through Cornell tweed = wonder.

BUT - LP through my Hiwatt = wonderland.

  • It’s very Search and Destroy. And you have nice legs.

  • Saw this on reddit

I really want to play through a 4x12! So many new experiences opened up for me just from learning a bit of guitar :D

I actual terms I think a 1x12 is my limit given living in a flat. I'm keeping my eye out for a 1x12 cab around the £100 mark to go with my Orange Micro Terror. The stock 1x8 cab is pretty weedy :(

  • I used to use a 4x12 as an extension cab for my 15w 1x10 combo. Sounded monsterous at a semi-reasonable volume but was impractical in London. Ended up selling it for peanuts to a guy who rents gear to touring bands.

  • I had a lush pair of TC Electronic bass cabinets (RS410 and Rs212) I deeply regretting selling when my last band broke up but they were a bit hench for home use sadly...

On the Singlecut/ Lea Paul front I've heard nothing but incredible things abuot the PRS Chris Robertson Singlecut SE. Humbucker in the bridge and P90 in the neck...

These two are nicely priced and very nice too...

  • could probably live this one: https://reverb.com/item/7075228-prs-eg-4-dark-blue-sparkle-1991-s886
but i think most prs guitars are butt ugly

  • it's those headstocks. the bootcut denim and square toed loafers of headstocks.

  • That's bullshit. Our old Matamps needed to be on 7 at least to get the power amp distortion moving in a nice space. That's where the sweet spot was.

Sound engineers need to realise it's their job to enable the decisions of the artists on stage, not try to control them. Baffle of shame? I'll put a baffle of shame in front of these fucking morons. If they can't see that turning a mic down is easier than buying a baffle then they've no business calling themselves sound engineers.

  • Lols.

Turning the amp down on stage has nothing to do with inability to turn the mic down. It's all about on-stage sound and sound clarity. Especially in smaller venues.

You turn that thing to exactly the level the engineer tells you, or you get off that stage. If you insist on bringing the 4x12 and turning the amp up to poweramp distortion without chucking in a loadbox or something... A baffle is really one of the more diplomatic ways of doing it.

IMO, YMMV etc. No hate, but the sound engineer is there for the audience, not the egos of the musicians.

  • I’m sure the 3 people directly in front of the roaring matamp really appreciated the sick toanz. Everyone else wondered why they couldn’t hear much of the guitars.

  • Fuck that man. I didn't spend decades honing my craft, working out the exact sweet spot of an amp, for some spotty local-level virgin to decide his PA is too delicate to go up past 8 on the dial.

This is why we always brought our own sound engineer on tour, and why we always wedgied the local sound engineers on general principle. Get that nerd the fuck out of here, he doesn't understand a thing about rock music.

  • Anyone coming to our gigs wondering why they can't hear much of the guitars would only have done so because htey'd spent the previous night's gig with their head in the cab, and we'd knocked all the audible range from their lugholes.

Now I think about it, we never had problems like this at proper venues. Places like The Garage, the LAII, the Astoria, fuck, even the Ballroom and the old Falcon understood that bands knew their equipment. You don't spend three or four days in a rehearsal room for six months before going off on tour in order to half arse your sound when you're on it. Only place I was ever told to turn down was at the Southampton Joiners - and that place had a stage that was literally four feet deep, so fuck them - and the Uxfest. And no-one ever got a good sound at the Uxfest, so fuck that guy.

  • EG4 is a nice guitar, I'd prefer an EG3 or ideally a DC3...

I'm hoping they bring out a "Mayercaster" soon now that he's switched to PRS and already has the Super Eagle II signature model. He has a few but there's no word on when they'll be made available to public.

  • Sure and sound engineers know the room. If you’re playing decent sized rooms and weren’t told to turn down then you probably had it right.
On the other hand, a 4x12 is never going be as loud or evenly distributed as a venue PA.

  • Yeah, I don't really like 100w amps for that reason. They're too loud for modern (i.e. digital) rigs. They made a lot of sense back in the 70s when the PAs were just doing your singers voice but things have moved on since then and everyone's backlined now.

  • Yeah and the really big boys are all mic’d offstage with iems and a cab or two on stage for posing/feedback.

I’m baffled by the current Fender amp lineup. I want something classic and full sounding that will break up before I go deaf. Any ideas? Nice reverb is a plus...

  • Tweed or otherwise? My cornell tweed has a tasty powercut switch to drop the volumes to reasonable level and push the tubes.

  • I hate those bands who are dishonest about their rigs. Get me a band like Sleep or Boris who run a wall of amps plugged in, or a band like RATM who have a single amp plugged in and sound better than anyone. That dishonesty in rigs - either way around - is total bullshit.

I'm a big fan of the Fender Deluxe Hot Rod III, nice and warm. Bit too big for me at home so replaced it with a Blues Junior but it's quite tinny in comparison. Maybe it'll warm in.
