I'm sure I recently read that the UK's industrial output has been steadily rising since the 1940s...

The factor that matters is employment.

Sounds like a decent bloke, has you over for drinks then delivers breakfast to your room the next morning...

Have we had this?
Hundreds of new drivers banned for mobile phone use

Comments from the RAC disappointing and presumably reflect a wider view
The RAC's Mr Williams said: "These people have spent hours and hours and hundreds of pounds learning to drive to gain their personal freedom only to throw it all away through this foolish behaviour.
"The only consolation is that they now won't be involved in some horrific crash caused by the distraction of a handheld mobile phone," he added. -

Why disappointing? :/

It's entirely possible that the quotes have been taken out of order by the BBC, but the fact that these people were 1) breaking the law and 2) endangering other people, yet the first statement is about their loss of freedoms (its a license, not a right!). Its only at the end of an article where they quote a Police officer who says
"This is not a minor offence and is never a risk worth taking because a moment's distraction behind the wheel can change lives forever.
"Our message is simple - don't do it," he added. -

I think you're misreading the tone, if not the actual words, of what's being said.
-
• #50236
I think the RAC have framed it well. These people obvs don’t understand [care about] the risk or consequences for others, or they wouldn’t be on the phone.

Doner Kitbags under threat ...
-
• #50238
"A scientific review in 2012 suggested a possible link between phosphates, when used as food additives, and heart disease, although the evidence remains inconclusive."
Seems a bit OTT, it's not that most of us eat bucketloads of Doner Kebab, so why go on inconclusive evidence?
HSE gone mad, grumble grumble :)
-
• #50239
Probably due the way the RAC see this as a breach of peoples personal freedom. Instead of them nullifying that freedom and time investment through using a phone whilst driving.

I wonder if vegan kebabs use phosphates, but I suspect not, so the assertion that “[i]f the European parliament gets its way, this would be the death sentence for the entire doner kebab industry in the European Union” is probably untrue.

Khan must have found such an utter mess if he's only now been able to get on to this.

Love the way everyone rallying around Damien Green is prefacing the word ‘porn’ with ‘legal’....
As others have pointed out if he wasn’t browsing porn then he let someone have pretty wide access to his laptop that I’m sure has some pretty privileged info on it, either way it doesn’t look good....

Rees-Mogg showing his true colours.

• #50244
I think the whole movement around Jacob Rees-Mogg can only be seen as a thoroughly good thing.
But I suppose that's only because I think he's an unelectable, cretinous throwback, and I suppose similar arguments were made about Corbyn.

I think it's different. Brits love a toff. Despite being a despicable human being since before entering politics, Boris Johnson has pretty much gotten anything he's ever wanted from voters.

What that expression they use for Trump?
A dumb person's idea of a smart person.
Similar with BoJo.
-
• #50247
No way. Don't be fooled into thinking that Johnson isn't smart. He's a calculated, devious, prick and every bit of his personality/act is stage managed.

I heard one apologist for Green claim that MP were far too busy, to "browse a range of leisure websites"...

No unnecessary "planned obsolescence" back when Voyager 1 was built...

(The car industry borrowed planned obsolescence from the bike industry in the 1920s)
Some progress but still pretty woeful;
