50/34 and 11-42 would give you 22 gear inches at the low end and 124 at the top, which would presumably cover loaded touring on steep hills at the low end and flat-out sprinting at the top. It's a silly range, but I'm just thinking about the options - I do a bit of bikepacking, some audaxing, the occasional sportive and it'd be nice to be able to keep up with a Sunday morning club run on the same bike.
