  • Dunno who makes them now, I've got Bosch on mine, which is kind of hipster anorakky.

The battery on a 996 sits just in front of the scuttle within the luggage compartment, there's loads of room for a switch.

  • Your two door estate dreams have been answered @Dammit.

  • It's a stunner.

  • Still loving it. It’s everything a car should be except generous with the luggage space and easy to park. (The Vantage would be better in those regards). It makes me feel fantastic every time I drive it. I know it’s much more of a GT but I think it steers, rides and even handles better than the Boxster did. Mine has the sports pack which improves everything.

The Boxster just made me annoyed and disappointed with its shitty plastics, dull driving experience, electrical inadequacies and recalcitrant gearbox. Kind of soured my view of Porsche ‘quality’.

As far as engineering quality goes, when you lift the bonnet and see all the extruded aluminium chassis sections, there’s nothing on it that looks like a compromise. And the interior is such a nice place to spend thousands of miles. And then there’s that noise. Basically, if you can get one, then you should.

  • My brother used to have one of those Micras - a 1 litre version in burgundy. The first (but not the last) time I managed to set my own clothes on fire while welding was when I was welding a patch over a gaping hole in the sill so it could struggle through another MOT. Definitely the last time I try welding galvanized steel though - the only steel my brother had for the patch was some 16 gauge galvanized steel which he'd beat into a shape not entirely unlikely the curve of the sill. Horrible car, horrible job.

  • I borrowed one a while back and couldn’t stop looking at it out of the window but I worry that would subside and I’d get fed up of the drive being a bit wooden.

A friend of mine bought one a while back. Spent a lot of time looking at it and washing it, and not much time driving it. Last I saw it was parked in storage and hadn't been driven for a couple of years.

  • Nice.

    That’s what I hoped you’d say.

Sub £50k, modern and dramatic is quite a short list as far as I can make out:

    Aston
    R8
    4C
    GranTurismo
    Evora

The i8 is getting cheaper but for big European adventures it doesn’t make sense.

    Anything I’m missing?

  • The Volvo (potentially) goes to a new home on Saturday, watch this space.

I'm going to see (the next) M5 on Sunday if so.

  • It (might) actually be happening!!

How long has project volvo 2.0 been dragging on now?

  • I’m kinda ready for that type of car ownership.

My neighbour has a DB11. He parks it right in the middle of his drive, perfectly square to the lines in the block paving and so he can see it all day from his bedroom office. He deliberately doesn’t garage it.

He washes it every weekend whether he’s used it or not.

It’s not like you can drive a super car properly anywhere in the south east anyway.

The Car&Classic add is in it's second month, I've had three people come to look at the car, one of which was a total fantasist and the two others both nice chaps.

Of those two, one came down from Norfolk, the other from Liverpool - it's the chap from Liverpool who may (emphasis on may) decide to purchase the car.

In the time since the advert went up I've put close to three grand into the Volvo, and it's being re-mapped on Saturday to iron out a partial throttle/tip-in issue that has come to light with the cold weather. I'm sticking to my asking price of 10k partially because of the recent expenditure, and partially because it's the best condition, manual 850R available in the UK.

With all of that said, I've been thinking about this for a while, as everyone knows - in part because running a 21 year old car and keeping it in perfect condition is something of a commitment if one wishes to do it right.

I am (possibly deluded) hoping that the M5 will require a smaller commitment to keep in A1 condition, being ten years old and at 80,000 miles rather than 185,000.

Based on available data (911, Volvo) i'd say there's not a chance in hell it will be cost efficient. Still, if you have the money and you still enjoy it then who the fuck cares!?

  • Yes, there is that. 911 goes in for paint 2nd of Jan.

  • From the Dutch guy who bought the M3 #nothingtoseehere

I think this is the maddest thing I have ever read.

  • Is he converting it to left hand drive? Or just stripping it as track day car?

    It has to work, no?

  • Evora is tempting, but might be a bit breaky.
I suspect that once you have got over the performance the R8 is just another dull Audi. Certainly to these eyes the looks got old fast.

    F Type?
    Merc SL?
Ferrari 360s are falling below the 50k mark if you want something older.

  • I agree with this^ re: audi.

my mate is looking to flog an s3 (owned since new), a '64 mini cooper and a Porsche 964 in order to have a modern sports car and is looking at a similar price range. he is considering a modern Porsche or an r8. I reckon the AM will be more fun, but he is timid

  • I reckon the AM will be more fun, but he is timid

    That about covers it.

Someone I know had a 4.7 Vantage when they were first released and he got two replacements before it was reliable enough to use. On the day the warranty ended he pxd it for a new 911 GT3.

  • I’m not yet in my 40s, which I think means I’m not legally allowed to own an F Type.

As you say, R8 is just a fast TT really, ditto SL, just a Merc.

I fear a £50k 360 would be a shitter. I went to view a cheap 348 once. It was really horrid. Ferraris don’t seem to respond well to actually being used.

  • I think he would regret replacing a 964 with any modern Porsche. The comparison would just be too hard to resist.
An Aston on the other hand, is a very different car.

  • You need to make sure Barry Griffin did the final inspection :-D
