thanks.
obviously, it's common sense. it's just that with the - mindblowing - thinness of the downtube, i didn't know how to judge the seattube capabilities. -

Get a trailer - much less likely to cause damage

I have a child portaging trailer, but would never use it in town as there is a never ending stream of bastards in Nissan Juke's who would be too busy texting/eating/doing make up to see something so small and low down.

yes, i am happy to use a trailer in the countryside, on whatever carbon frame i can find i might add, but that's a different topic.

@coldharbour couple of post build questions
1 - for the little stand offs that the barrel adjustors screw into, what is the equivalent screw size? I want to remove the barrel adjustors and put in a couple of nylon screws to protect the threads.
2 - Any suggestions on where I might get a blanking grommet to to cover the DI2 cable entry point?
-
• #1632
1-M5 so anything that size will fit.
2- I use the standard shimano di2 grommet, but you can buy fully closed ones from rs etc... it's a 6.5mm hole. -

So, most annoying issue so far goes to.......... @Scilly.Suffolk s bike, or at least his neighbours who he is building it up for.
Email ytd along the lines of "building bike up, it's great and all but BB shell is back to front. Y U DO THIS?!?!?!"
For those that haven't built a frame before, if you buy pre-cut BB shells (as almost everyone does) you would be aware that there are registration marks on the BB shells to let you know what side has which thread. In 7 years of frame building these have always been correct, if you haven't now you know. Whoever was on the CNC lathe the day this BB shell was made however was not, or just wanted to piss on my parade. So, we have a BB shell with the threads cut on the wrong side of the shell. There is really nothing doing about this, but luckily we have a couple of spares in the correct size so were able to swap out, and all of the other frames seem to be fine, luckily a mechanic was putting it together and therefore didn't just jam a BB in, which would have been another thing to replace.
The interesting thing (for us) will be whether the supplier will replace the full material costs of the frame, or whether they are going to just say BB shell only. I can see them saying 'well the registration marks are only a guide' but if that was the case then there is no point in having the bastard things on there. If the latter, I think I'm not far off buying a CNC lathe. So all dark clouds etc....

Within an hour or so of me emailing Matt (on a Sunday afternoon), this was resolved.
Initially offering to build a new frame from scratch, it was then established that there was a spare frame in the correct size that just needed spraying.
The new frame will be with me mid-week, so it's only put the whole shebang back by a week.
He even offered to drive down with it, although if that was in the Volvo then I doubt it would be any quicker...
A+ for after-sales service from me and the customer.

Probably an expensive way to learn the lesson, but never trust subcontractors' to hold spec unless a: your contract makes them responsible for consequential loss or b: verification in house is more expensive than having it be wrong.

So could you just use a BB the wrong way around? Can't be worse than Italian threads right? Isen factory seconds shop?

Well ITA has one of the threads the wrong way around, reversed BSA has both of them the wrong way around, so even worse?

Yes, one of those things where I feel stupid now, but it has never been an issue before. Lesson learnt, I'll just take it out on some kittens tonight.
(I won't be beating any kittens irl)

This is his plan. I think it is a lot harder for BB's to come out of hollowtech type systems than on square taper as they are under compression so imagine he will be fine, but obvs not for customer bike.

Am going to have this printed out.

Send it to your supplier.

hollowtech type
Probably has to be actual Hollowtech (or FSA MegaExo), since GXP, UltraTorque and PowerTorque are all handed to some degree above and beyond the threading.

Yes sorry I meant ht2 or the 'i can't believe its not ht2' rip offs. He's using 6800 so should be ok.

I think there is some sort of aptitude test for having one. My mum has one. She would definitely pass. Or fail. Whatever is worse.
Without being a pain (commence being a pain) it's for the seat manufacturer to say not us. Having said that, with the very same seat tube, and much sillier rear end I have ran one with a ~15kg child, as well as trailer for the whole of coast to coast and it didn't catch on fire. I would suggest having a nicde long post and doing exactly as the manufacturer of the seat tells you to, as we haven't specifically designed them with this in mind.
