I don’t know what the freehub is - always had 10 spd cassettes on this hub, just can’t remember if I’ve used spacers...

And it didn’t sound right when I was tightening it... but that could also be my general incompetence

But you are asking about a spacer behind the cassette?
If the lockring tightens up on the last cog and there's no movement in the cassette then its fine.
There'd be too much thread out if there was a spacer missing and you'd be able to rock the cassette side to side after doing up the lock ring

yeah, spacer behind the cassette. there doesn't seem to be play, but I thought there was some rule about how much space is between cassette and end of hub...

here...
