  • Yeah sure, the new threshold identifies what I should be capable of for an hour, like FTP but for HR. (That's my understanding - Is that what you mean?)

What I don't understand is which metric that came from; did I hit a new max HR and therefore TP calculated a new threshold?

  • Some questions from a noob. I skimmed the thread and didn’t see answers.

    • is it best to use the app on iPhone 6 or MacBook Pro? They are my options.
    • if MacBook, do I need an ant dongle for max benefit, or just connect over Bluetooth? I couldn’t get it to sync over Bluetooth with my MacBook today (using Elite Direto).
    • if iPhone, is there a recommended / preferred mount to set it up on the bars?
  • As far as I know, you’ll need an Ant dongle for either option

  • Hmm - I didn’t do a session but I think I connected it on iPhone 6 with Bluetooth

  • Did you figure this out? Asking myself the same question

  • There isn't, AFAIK, any way to modify the plans. Though, so long as you fit the prescribed workouts within the week and get suitable rest then you can kind of do it as you go.

    If you were to do the SS Base Plan (Mid Intensity) then it gives you (intensity/difficulty in brackets);

    M- rest (0)
    Tu - hard ride (6/7)
    W - easy ride (3)
Th - hardest 'weekday' ride (8)
    F - rest (0)
Sa - hardest ride all week (9/10)
    Su - hard ride (7)

Of course you can shift those around to suit you, so long as the rest days are roughly in the same place relative to hard days. I often swap the Wednesday recovery day for a light outdoor ride.

  • Yeah, as @Tenners said, I don't think it's possible. I quickly gave up on following the plans but they do give you a good idea of suitable workouts.

  • Thanks both.

I just did the FTP test. My FTP is embarrassingly shit, but I haven’t done much but get fat since 2015 and you have to start somewhere. Probably the only thing I took satisfaction from is my pacing. I think I managed to get it all out in both 8 minute efforts at exactly 90 rpm. 292 for the first 8 and 287 for the second 8, for an ftp of 260 for full disclosure. Goal is to get my weight down to 82 kg and ftp up to around 290 to 300.

The thing that really surprised me was my heart rate. It didn’t seem screwy in the warm up, but it was around 185 in both efforts. I haven’t seen it that consistently high since a 10 mile tt I did around 2011. Not sure if it was a reading error - if not I’m glad I didn’t keel over.

  • Did you do it indoors? The heat build up elevates your heart rate.

I've seen the same, noticeably higher heart rate when doing turbo stuff when it's warm than I'd normally see outside.

  • Yeah - indoors - and it got a bit steamy.

  • Sounds about right for HR at the end of an FTP test. If you've not trained much, your FTP will jump up quickly.

  • I've got a months free trial if anyone wants in.

  • Just signed up for this - I want to improve my 25mi TT performance (and 10mi while I'm at it).
I currently fit in about 5.5-6.5hrs per split between extended training commutes and turbo, but will be sacking off the commute-training over winter for turbo.

Where should I start?: 'Build Phase' > 'Sustained Power Build'?

  • Feel the Base

  • There's a 40km TT training plan. It looks HORRIBLE - lots of long sessions at FTP.

But yeah, what Hippy said - do a base/build first.

  • I've not seen that. Maybe I should do my own 'Project 49'.

So far I've been useless and not hit a single session of the 'plan' not that I used it last time either but I thought it might be nice to try and do it. I reckon I stand more chance of doing the three sessions in the same day than spread over the week when I tend to be caned from gym or late from work (or let's face it, drunk).

  • would be interested if this is still going?

  • aha, you've succumbed to the misery of a turbo? I've actually got two, PM me your email address and I'll send one though.

  • Fucking waste of cunting time. 2min in to the first cunting fucking 8min the cunting fucking interface stops work so into fucking air spinny shitcunt mode we fcking goffuckingcuntbastardfuck.
Anyone want a computrainer, laptop and tt bike? Oh, the battery was flat and as soon as I started the fucking FD cable snapped so all in all I've had more mechanicals in one fucking turbo ride than I've had for the last 6 motnhs onf the fucking cunt road.

  • Have you considered turbo training?

  • I've considered hitting everything in the area with a fucking sledge hammer.

    Luckily I don't own a sledge hammer.

Tried to install USB ANT+ stick (which used to work, dunno why it stopped) and of course it didn't fucking install for 10min by which time I'd already punched the laptop shut and thrown the keyboard at the bike.

  • Poor Hippy. Is this a good time to ask what Project 49 is?

I've started the 40km TT plan a couple of times as I've become weirdly obsessed with going under an hour in a 25 on a road bike. I think two weeks is the record before getting fed up. Two sessions over three hours is plenty for me each week.

  • My 25mi PB is 50:02. I'd like that number to be a 49-something. Someone else did a similar thing and documented it. http://www.cyclingweekly.com/videos/fitness/project-49

  • What you need to do is push just a little harder on the pedals. You're welcome.

  • It's 3 seconds you have to find. Can't you just tell people you can do 49:59? Errors in measurement, something physics, something error bars.
