Mince Pie Appreciation

  • They should make mints pies. That's what I reckon.

  • A delicious post-Xmas dinner palate cleanser. I want a piece of this action - we'll be

    (wait for it)

    minted.

  • Apparently M&S 'the collection' mince pies (£2.50/6) came top of the Which? taste test. But I also have out-of-date mincemeat in the cupboard, so may have to make my own (with added booze of course) first.

  • Train wankering this morning as I'm feeling a bit rough. Gonna reward myself with a mincer from sainsbobs when I get to Vauxhall. Every cloud.

  • Could be a deeper filling but it's doing a job.

  • Pastry to filling ratio looks way off on that.

  • Yep, definitely on the flat side. Perhaps my error was in choosing the "freshly baked" over the boxed long life ones...or just avoid Sainsbury's.

  • Their bog standard deep fill mincers are #bleachapproved

  • Also, I like that "mincer" is catching on

  • On the other hand, Sainbury's freshly-baked jam-filled doughnuts are spot on.

  • Fuck it, Greggs at lunch time.

  • Contrary to Scrabble's example above, the Co-op Truly Irresistible (allegedly deep-filled) all butter mincers suffer greatly from 'the gap'.

The upper crust (dashed with powdered sugar rather than granulated, but that's a different story) breaks through to a chasm of dead air before reaching the admittedly tasty boozy filling. The lid can be removed entirely to remedy this, but that feels unnecessarily involved for what should be a perfect handheld snack.

Of course, this matters less when heated, submerged in custard, and bludgeoned into a delicious mess.

Will move on to Sainsbury's deep filled with our next 'big shop' and report back.

  • The gap becomes an advantage when popping the top and filling with brandy cream, but otherwise it's a flaw.

  • I'm considering sticking some cheap pies into individual freezer-bags, mashing them all up and freezing into bar/roll shapes for winter rides. Will this work?

  • I bought a sixer of Konditor & Cook poshos yesterday.

Fuck me they're good. Tenner for six though..

  • Icewland are making a big thing of how their mince pies won some award. Has anyone had one?

I don't go to Iceland (my Mum does etc etc)

  • Greggs have just insulted the Christ Child, so make sure you get there before the flaming torch brigade.

  • You mean their minge pies?

  • When warmed up in a microwave,
inverting such frugal mince pies, ensures the crust gets a dousing of any liquid,
    and
when pierced provides a caldera to hold the topping of choice, (plain natural yoghurt goes well).

  • Freshly baked Sainsbury's are better than the boxed jobbies imo. They are a bit flat but come in packs of 4 so not an issue :)

  • Hot custard and ice cream is the combination of the gods.

  • plain natural yoghurt
