thanks for that! some helpful tips. maybe it'll try a bit of over clearer. but there's a risk of ruining the rims or making things worse, maybe i'll just use the rear brake more for a while. i'll post my results. thanks again.

Hiya I'm in the nursery at the present time, because i have only just joined. However i have a fab relationship with the local stove enamellers, I can also chase and face bottom brackets - english only i'm afraid - with proper Park Tools. Can also do stripdown, complete rebuilds. You supply the parts and let me know how its gotta be.

Hello and welcome. Sounds interesting. Got any examples of work they've done for you? What are their prices like & where are they / you?
also note this thread is specifically about painting rims.
here's a general painting thread
and here's perhaps the biggest frame coating thread. It's mostly about one powder-coater, but other people and techniques get discussed too. -

Depends how much time you have to spare. Seems awkward way to do it.

the worst crimes against bike are committed when someone takes a paint brush to it to "make it better"

In a past project I repainted my rims, really wasn't as much of a faff as I imagined. Scotch pad, 4-5 layers of paint and still holding strong. Mine was for a quick fix so didn't even use primer of lacquer, I'm sure you could do a much better job.

I have a pair of white powdercoated Aerotrack rims, which I am planning on stipping with some Nitromors and leaving them as the bare metal underneath. I am then planning on running brakes on the rims after doing this - will this work? If I dont clearcoat the rims after stripping will they rust? If so then obviously its a no go for the brakes. Also I know that brakes on a rattlecanned rim is a no-go, but how about on a stripped one? Cheers,

Aluminium doesn't rust
Excellent news...
Can anyone tell me if an aluminium rim stripped to the bare metal will be a usable breaking surface?

Got a rear wheel with alu box rims that I would really love to make black to match the front wheel (a quick fix while I hunt for a matching wheel), what's the best way to do it? I'm thinking marker pen maybe?

You can buy couple of cans of plasticote. Alu primer, and a Black. Clean the rim, mask the nipples with tape and off you go. It gives a really hard finish.

Good info, will try it

Would that spray.bike stuff be good for painting a rim black?
-

Cheers. It's only a shitty rim, so not that bothered. Might as well use the cheapest paint I can find.

I went to the automotive parts shop thing in Stockwell the other day and got a couple decent cans of colour for ~3.50 each

Yeh good point, that's what I was thinking. But they're over 20 years old - I wanted something a bit more imminent.
