  • Thanks - that makes things clear.

Apart from price, what are the differences between aluminium case and stainless steel case? My friend has a Model 1 watch in stainless - he is a mechanic. Could I get away with an aluminium one - i'm far from a mechanic but I would use if on a squash court.

    Thanks

  • I wouldn’t recommend with aluminium version.

Had aluminium model Series 3 for 13 days and returned it to Apple Store. In those 13 days, managed to make a little deep scratch in display. The aluminium case will get scratched pretty easily aswell.
Had same experience with previous models.

Upon returning, managed to get black stainless steel with sapphire glass (Series 1) for £130. I personally have the watch for the design and actual time/weather/alarm functions.
They were obviously used, but arrived without single scratch on display or fhe casing - so it probably really works.
They are also a bit heavier which feels nice.

But depands for what and how you wanna use them.

Personally I wouldn’t spend £400 for aluminium model or even more for stainless steel version.

  • Thanks for that. I'll check the specs of the Series 1 vs Series 3. I think the Series 3 stainless is overpriced.

  • Yeah, I would just go to Apple store and get a model and strap you want and test it out (size, functions, strap,...) and you can return it within 14 days, no questions asked.

Then you can decide what exactly you need/want.

I literally use only what’s on the face and it works. Occasional easy Apple Pay comes handy too. Siri I use for activating timer when making coffee in the morning and got full hands - works great ;)

  • if I ... have my phone with me ... why would I not use my phone

This is the question that really needs answering. I have of couple of smart watches but gradually abandoned them. The only thing I found useful was them vibrating on my wrist when I got a call/text so I didn't miss it.

  • Looks like the stainless Series 1 is unavailable, leaving the Series 3 stainless - £649 (42mm) which I think is too much money for my Mrs to waste on me. Series 3 aluminium with GPS is £359 (42mm) which still seems slightly expensive - £80 more expensive than a similar Series 1. I'll ponder this for a while.
    Thanks all

  • YMMV, but I’ve found my silver aluminium Series 0 Sport to be very durable. No scratches or marks that I can see. I was under the impression that the stainless case scratches more easily.

  • Thanks for that - very useful info.

  • Have apple come up with a good way of the apple watching being useful when you have two iphones yet?

I have a personsal and work phone that i have on me most of the time (weekdays) and would want work phone notifications on the watch during the week...

  • You would need to re-pair with the other phone at the weekend or buy two apple watches.

  • I recently got myself a smark watch, was really excited by all the smart abilities for about 5 days, now I have turned most of them off. I still like the fact that I can have a different watchface whenever my mood takes me though. And the notification is the only thing I find useful but can absolutely do without.

  • Anyone had problems with bluetooth headphones paired with your Macs? The sound keeps stuttering for me.

It's not the headphones - they're great with everything else - and it's not the hardware (as I've got a hackintosh and the PC side is fine) so it seems to be Apple's bluetooth software that's the issue (which is what some quick googling suggests - it's out-of-date and crap).

But interested to know how common this is...

  • Sometimes my Qc35s have an issue with my 2015 MBP I usually have to hold down the pair button right next to laptop, check it's not paired with more than 2 devices or delete and then re-pair it.

    Never had stuttering though

  • I know this may not be the best place for this post but it relates to my recent Apple Watch queries.

Apple Watch or Fitbit Charge 2 (or similar) - all opinions welcome.

  • alt + shift + click on blutooth icon > debug > reset. Try pairing again

  • iPhone X unexpected arriving tomorrow... a nice little surprise as it's my stay at home study day. Folks who have received theirs already, thoughts on the phone?

  • I still can’t get over the price (went for 256gb).

Overally phone is amazing (especially the camera - seriously).
Notch I like as a design thing and even within apps, BUT, having a game supported for iPhone X that is full screen and the notch is hiding actual gameplay or while playing video in full screen. That’s just terrible.

What is the most annoying thing though is not actual phone, but iOS 11.

iOS is only going downhill. So many bugs, errors, non supported apps/games. No only talking about aspect ratio, but app/game not even want to start saying “developer needs to update this”. On a game for which I’ve paid £4.99 couple years back it’s really annoying (not that I would want to play it, but...).

  • Yeah IOS 11 is the buggiest full release I've ever seen, so many issues and thing turning on that are off and stuff that its unreal.

  • gestures are amazing. super intuitive. I've almost got over the absurd price because i love it so much.

Also the battery life is unreal. Like I can easily charge my phone overnight and still have power left the following day when i get back from work, I barely made it to bed the same day on my 6s

  • Do you seriously expect a £4.99 game to come with free updates for a few years and a few OS updates?

Reminds me of the outcry over the £1.99 update of Monument

  • Maybe I should buy an X...

  • So X has arrived, cat got in the way of unboxing... like literally because we need to go to the vet first unexpectedly, it'd better not be a huge bill.

@rogan, Re: battery, do you usually have bluetooh on all the time? Because my 6s plus without bluetooh on, battery can still last almost 2 days, I got it when it first came out. With bluetooth on, it's about a day, if that.

  • Hope you've got insurance, my last vet bill was 2.5k and it wasn't covered. Told them to keep the little shit, he only cost £50 and I can just get another 50 for that price...

  • Yes I do, but I am always worried they won't pay out, especially we only just switched insurer about 6 weeks ago. But luckily, the vet thinks the cat's problem is diet related and she needs to do a few big poop poop...

Back to the Apple land, I am resisting the temptation to open tonight and to wait till tomorrow when everything else arrives... and when proper work is done...
