With regards to the Police vans convoy, they rolled passed us by St Katherines dock at about half 4 yesterday afternoon. from 13 floors up it looked like a planned moving through traffic at busy periods exercise. I once tried following a group of bike cops doing similar through south london once and despite being on a similar bike there was no way i was keeping up. those guys shift. /csb

Apparently this is his fifth terrorist attack. It is noteworthy that Vegas hasn't been declared a terrorist attack yet.

Of the four before this thing in New York, one was perpetrated by a Muslim, one was a bomb attack against a mosque and the other two were right wing related.

Radio 5 presenter this morning said to a US interviewee that this was the first time a vehicle was used for an attack in the US, got totally schooled on Charlottesville.

It's good that they caught the perpetrator alive this time and that he'll get a trial. That will hopefully knock a few layers of shine off the stupid idea that murderers can be martyrs.

I just had a look at that cycle track on StreetView. The footway seems too narrow to drive along, so it's not surprising he chose the track. It's about the width of a standard traffic lane and while there are no insurmountable barriers on either side, it must be very difficult to react if you're being driven at at speed. Just horrific.

Was there any political or ideological motivation for the Vegas attack? If not then it's mass murder but not terrorism.

Yes, an interesting development. On your comment I would say that the process from generation > transmission > distribution > supply > consumption > charging is so convoluted that you might not expect to see an immediate impact. But it should of course be factored into the overall costs. That said, I imagine the economics of negative pricing will change in the future as storage becomes more feasible/affordable.

I think it's probably fair to say that "negative pricing" of electricity is not a good thing. It still costs money to produce electricity, maintain power plants on down time and maintain the electrical systems that transport this power everywhere. The negative pricing is a result of it being cheaper for the transmission companies than having to repair/compensate for a network that has just overheated and caused widespread powercuts.

Still, great that wind power is able to provide so much clean electricity, we just need to ensure that the investment is made in electrical systems to allow this kind of event to be managed better.
