You know facial ID has been available on android for years, right? I don't get it, throwback tech sold to the gullible...
That said, I'm tempted to try an iPhone next time I change handsets, not an X tho'... It'll be old...
-
• #12083
No it hasn't.
All previous iterations of facial recognition to unlock have just stored a 2d image of that person and then compared that to a live picture when unlocking. This can be fooled by a printed picture etc and is highly inaccurate.
FaceID is essentially a mini xbox kinect which detects you in a 3d space. Meaning it measures distance between points on your face on a 2d plane (like android facial recognition) and in terms of depth. This can't be fooled by pictures. Because it detects using light on the 940nm spectrum it's not affected by beards, glasses, sunglasses etc either.
It also requires attention meaning the user must actively look at the device.
This tech has categorically never been used in consumer mobile device before.

Ha!
When Apple fanboiz attack!!!
-
• #12086
Certainly not a fanboy but calling people gullible when you don't know what you're on about is a bit daft...
Take piss out of the notch, the price tag, the unfinished UI in ios 11 etc but faceid is a genuine innovation.

Does anyone know of a lightning to aux adapter/cable that doesn't destroy the sound quality? My Apple adapter makes a whistling sound and the cheap cable I got from Amazon lasted all of 45 minutes.

I don't know much about the electronics involved but science would dictate that the headphone impedance and sensitivity need to be well matched to that type of connection to avoid problems. After all that port will likely have some electrical noise on it since it works for data/power and now audio.
A lightning headphone pre might sort you out but it's an extra box to lug around.

Would something like this remove the hiss?
Yet another thing to carry around though...

I use a combination of Lightening Camera kit thing which gives a USB, then a Dragonfly USB DAC. Bit bulkier but both fit into my earphone case. Great sound quality but will set you back over £100 though...

Cheers everyone. The Dragonfly DAC looks to be the best option. A lot more spendy than I was hoping for.

iPhone 7 Plus, Matte Black, 128Gb... anyone interested?
iPhone X arriving tomorrow so selling immediately.
Comes boxed with all original accessories (all unused) and comes with matching coloured dock worth £50.
£425 delivered in London
It's a US model A1784 which means it works globally and, aside from coming with a two pronged charger in the box, is identical to UK models in terms of radio frequencies etc.
The screen, camera lenses, back and sides of the phone are all completely blemish free. There is a minor scuff ~1mmx2.5mm on the bottom right corner on the phone and a three small scuff marks (each 0.5mmx0.5mm) on the top left corner of the phone.
eBay prices for boxed ones in the same condition are between £450 and £525...

If you've not already ordered look at a Cyrus Soundkey. Only a tenner more I think and superior to the Dragonfly.
WhatHifi says the Soundkey makes the Dragonfly "sound like something of a blunt instrument".

3x 15" Macbook Pro Mid-2012's for sale.

Woah, almost 2 days since X release and no talks?
Got one myself in 256gb Space Grey.
Initial thoughts: much nicer design in person, display really is amazing (was used to iPhone 6 and 7 display), LOVING the new swipe up "home button" (the thing I was really scared of), stunning back camera (only few simple test snaps), haven't had any issues with FaceID so far, battery draining a bit too fast IMO (never had issue with battery life with any iPhone, but this one seems to eat the battery faster than previous ones - I think).
Altogether, pretty happy with it, but think it's a bit pricey for what it is.
I'll probably keep it anyway as I can't live without latest tech trends...

Agreed i got mine yesterday eve but only been playig with it today
Its absolutely ridiculously priced but its beautiful and lovely to use, im already used to the lack of home button and the new gestures.
On the other side of apple i got a 15 touchbar mbp at my new job this week and ill be switching it out for a 13 maxed out non touchbar ASAP.
