The heretical question to ask is what do we actually use it for? Record a ride for 'posterity'? Training? If so, how many people do we know who are training for something specific and can actually get something useful out of its metrics? Most people record commutes and if we're being honest with ourselves that is completely pointless.
My guess is that it's just like any other social media app, in that it is mildly interesting but mostly people just check it like they check any number of other social media things. The new UI nearly strips out the last of its real life applications and gives it that wonderful look and feel of every other dissassociative and mildly depressing social media platform.
Recording commutes does a few things for me, I replace the chain and cassette on time, I know exactly how many miles I can claim at 20p per mile and chainattacking Q1 segments.
