Most of it is probably useful, except for the oxy fuel cutting wand, unless you're robbing a safe. You will need hoses to join your regulators to the torch. One thing that is worth considering is new regs and flash back arrestor for the torch, they don't age per se but you don't know what life they've had. Never use ptfe tape when trying to solve leaks, they can clog a flash back arrestor very easily and then you're going to have a bad time.

Have you seen his previous frame modifications?

mwahahaha
new regs and flash back arrestor for the torch
definitely will look into this, as I don't want to compromise on the safety (just want to do it cheaply!)
@dancing james
don't worry I have turned over a new leaf... #teamjdmitch is being [insert metallurgical bonding pun here] with #teamweldaweld

I have, I loved it although I've always been a fan of "puppy slaying". ;)

I have a booth built in my workshop, with filtered extraction, a 100 litre compressor and a selection of devilbis "touch up guns" as they're smaller as well as a cheap and cheerful clarke gun for priming. I use a full face 3m mask, although now I'm soon going to be paying someone to paint here I'm having to move over to air fed masks. @hoops has a much neater set up than me, as does Dan Cole.

Depends what you want to do? Lugged, fillets, welding?
-
• #112
Lugged 4 life
Also is there a quick rule of thumb (#buybritish?) for quality of flashback arrestors ... I am seeing prices from a couple quid to £30 and they all look the same! -
• #113
I'd just buy boc ones, know what you're getting. I don't think there's much to go wrong with them, but if they did go wrong it would be a bad situation. Also, never use ptfe tape. Don't know if I've mentioned that yet...

How do you hold small bosses and bits in place while you heat them for brazing?

Think it's only a matter of time before liberty buy reynolds themselves it only a small operation in Birmingham now and under single person ownership. This will give them a ground up model from tubing to builders to retailing platform. It'll be great to see decent volume frame manufacturing back in the UK.

Just attempted welding Stainless (10 x 1mm tube) used settings i would normally use for mild steel and it blew out big time, reduced amps same thing still.. the tungsten i use is ok for ally and steel, is there a special one that i should be using for s/s?

• #117
What tungsten are you using?

i'm using gold tungsten

Looking at improving my frame jig at the moment. Does anybody know where I could purchase bottom bracket assembly and a seat tube cone for my jig to improve accuracy? I've got the headtube puck sorted from The Bicycle Academy. Something like the kit advertised on Bicycle Manufacturing Limited but he seems to be really busy at the minute so it's difficult to buy from him. Any cheap solutions would be greatly appreciated but of course any solution would be good.
Thanks

What are the varying styles for a segmented fork? And what are the pros and cons compared to a unicrown fork?
-
• #121
DO you have a local machine shop? If not, do you have basic CAD skills and are able to supply drawings? What you want is simple, but I'm assuming will be jig specific.

Is this for your TJD frame? Forks are a pain in the arse, in that for something you think should be so much simpler than a frame, that actually take a load of time to build, and have to deal with a suprising amount of force. I'd have a look at some designs of both, decide what you like the look of, then tell Ted and ask what he thinks. So many of the frame desiciions will effect the fork that it's best to let him run with it.

I've not forgotten about this, just need to check what what the colours on these silly weld porn tungstens correspond to ;)

ha, thanks!

Oh we have already had that discussion! He sent me some pics of both and told me I can have whatever style I want as long as he is happy with the construction of it. Currently, I think we are both keen on the segmented type, with wishbone stay (not as pencil thin as yours... 😬) so instead of bothering him with telling me the possible 1000s variations of styles and look etc, I thought I'd ask here.
He is waiting for me to decide on the fork, then he can finalise the headtube angle and rake etc etc. Then we are good to go!
And despite what everyone else has said, I am going for a Ti fork, Ted has some rather genius thoughts to make it a super duper fork!
What's your paint set up/process like? Specifically what guns and paints do you use, and how far do you go with safety?
