Anyone know anything about disc brakes?

  • Cack-handed Argh! Run away!

  • Get the M7000s

  • I only got M8000 over them because the bundle came with better rotors.

  • Link?

I probably should replace the front rotor since the rear is new. I don't HAVE to use Shimano rotors do I? (rear is Powertap)

  • It was a madison deal for August (yay trade account) and no, any rotors will do but I needed them too and the XT deal had icetech ones for not much more.

  • If I need to re-hose my front brake (shimano st-rs505) is there any alternative to spending £20 on an official shimano kit? Smbh 59 jk? £20 for a 45cm long hose seems a bit excessive even if it does include a pair of olives.

    Is there a generic alternative?

Edit - tweeks sell it by the metre at 5.99 - sorted. Thank you google.

  • No just buy the correct hose

They are spendy because they are supposed to last forever and have the correct fittings

  • Yes I was thinking the same...next time I will measure 3 times and cut once.

  • Anyone know a cheap place to get disc caliper spacers? Realised my rear spyre sits a little too low and its fucking the brake pads. Just need spacers to bring it up ~5mm. Would v brake spacers work?

  • 5mm is a lot, are you sure you have the right adapter on there? The top of the pad should just contact the outer edge of the rotor.

  • Surely if your calliper is sitting 5mm too low it'd be clashing with the edge of the rotor?

  • Ok maybe 5mm was an exaggeration, more like 2-3mm but enough for the pads to get torn to shreds at the bottom where they overhang. I'll post up a pic in a minute

  • 30mb file limit is dreamy. Dont have to fuck around with imgur or trying to reduce the resolution. You can kind of see how the top of the pad doesnt hit the outside of the rotor, and how it overhangs the bottom. Is my adaptor the wrong way round or would some small shims fix this?

  • Adding a small washer between the calipers and adaptor can help.

Also I would replace the pads with the Shimano M05 (or B01s which come with the pin that isn't needed on the TRP) while you fit a small washer.

  • Yep. Already have shimano resins waiting to go in. Will wait till these pads are properly fucked and do a load of jobs in one go. Bike also needs new gear cables, inline barrel adjuster, bar tape and S900 left hand lever
    Cheers ed!

  • The rotor that the Spyre is most often pictured with seems to have quite a wide contact area, perhaps the rotor you are using (looks like Shimano) isn't the optimum match?

  • Hmm possibly. Would it be to do with the spyre pad or the spyre design itself? Would it be fixed once I swap to shimano pads? I'll see how I get on with a small spacer first before swapping out the rotors

  • inline barrier adjuster? doesn't it have that on the calipers?

Look into Cane Creek SCR-5, better cable pull with disc.

  • Barrel adjuster for the gear cable. Currently I'm using a gx rear mech which doesnt have an adjuster. Cables run along top tube so no adjuster there either.

I have no problems with the levers/spyres feel so not going to change the levers. Those wouldnt let me change gear anyway

  • Hmm, if the Shimano pads are compatible then you'd figure the Shimano rotor would be too (with either original pads or replacement Shimano ones).

    I'm stumped.

Edit: probably manufacturers have figured that pads don't wear fast enough so if they make them over hang and get chewed up then you have to buy new ones all the sooner.

  • I have a spare trp rear 160mm adapter lying around and when comparing it with a shimano one it is actually 1.5mm higher!

So as @edscoble says 2 m6 washers should help.

  • That is true, I found out the hard way when a Shimano brake pads have uneven wear due to sitting on tektro own asaptor.

  • I'll try a couple of washers and see how that goes. If they overhang the outside of the rotor it shouldnt chew up the pads too much

  • Anybody got any experience with campy shifters and spyres?
Been doing my research but its a 50/50 where people say it has a ridiculous amount of lever throw needed and the half saying its fine as long as you set it up correctly. Some says no amount of good setup will help with the lever throw. Not sure if I should just throw the towel and use Shimano or risk it and use spyres with campy

  • use Shimano
