• He's solidly behind it, but everybody who's tried in the past was eventually defeated by the established transport arrangements. I've been told there were attempts in the 90s and Livingstone also pursued it, with several types of possible solutions, including an end-to-end tram. As far as I know, nobody has yet found a way to provide an adequate interchange at either end to transfer passengers from one mode to another (be that bus to tram or bus to underground and vice versa, and then how to turn buses around) as the passenger volumes in the peak hour are just too great. They're now pinning their hopes on Crossrail, but I'm pretty sure that won't work, either--it'll only increase the overall numbers hugely.

    It's been a very important street for much too long for change to be easy. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I can't see it happening based on the proposals that I've seen so far.
