When you refilled the system, did you put the heater on to the hottest setting and open the heater matrix fully?
Thick white smoke from exhaust suggests burning coolant, worth checking if it's actually using it too so maybe change the expansion tank first
Possibly not very well. Or not the final time anyway. Fear it's a bit bolting the door after the horse has bolted. Will try expansion tank and top cap tomorrow and hope that sorts it
if the white smoke is as you describe, i think you might be right
Take plugs out and look at the ends.
