Actually to be serious, my brother who is a landscape gardener swears by his Japanese ones.

Question of my own...

I need to build a couple of retaining walls, both a max of about a metre deep, one is 10 metres long, one closer to 30.

Looking into options, I am rubbish at blockwork so that is ruled out, Sleepers are possible, but I suspect would work out to be much £££ and if I use proper reclaimed ones will leach creosote through the summer. Last option I have thought of is to use Gabion baskets, I have about 200 tonnes of flint in a pile in the back garden, so filling them won't be an issue, and they work out a lot cheaper than sleepers and in theory should last longer.

Has anyone else got any bright (cheap!) ideas that don't involve paying someone more skillful than me?

What flavour? You can cut them down now if they're ramblers, take out the old stems and cut the rest down two thirds, handful of bonemeal and mulch.

Trim down by about a third now then in January take right down to just a few twigs poking out the soil trimming to just above a couple of good buds.

Thanks, I’ll try that elsewhere but the trees are ankle deep in poo. RHS says it’s either or, fungus or poo not both.

I've not installed one, I looked into it a couple of years ago but never pulled the trigger. I think Hozelock will give you everything you need (no idea if they're the best value or not).

It looks good fun to plan it all too - like a big construction kit.

My dad put one in 15 or so years ago. Mum recently replaced the control unit but other than that it’s been a hassle free godsend for her hanging baskets.

I don't think @Ramsaye said the tree would be killed by a fox but both the foxes and my dogs love digging where bonemeal has been used so I can't use it in my garden.

especially if you incorporated some planting pockets in them for instant plant life.

Space and stone are not an issue! Tempted by trying to incorporate plant pots inside the framework to grow from.

Need something that grows as quickly as ivy but not so horrible!

Yes I know what he meant lol, the point I was trying to make from my experience of planting treees, with added stuff and different methods like one tries, I simply find that staking and planting to the right height are far more important than adding bonemeal fungi etc, I'm not saying they don't work or help but you can plant a tree without and get perfect results, I do believe that with too much goodness in the planting hole doesn't encourage the roots to spread out, cheers
