  • Assuming people in this thread have iOS and Macs... could you visit this page on your devices and upload a screenshot: https://www.cs.uic.edu/~s/musings/tls13-enterprises/

It's the font... is that font nicer than the font on LFGSS? So I want to see what it looks like on iOS devices, etc.

  • On iPhone 7+...

Copied the text for direct comparison:

As the TLS 1.3 standardization process (hopefully) comes to a close, there has been some drama on the TLS WG mailing list and at the recent IETF 99 meeting in Prague regarding the use of TLS 1.3 in enterprise networks. This is a surprisingly contentious and important topic that I suspect many people who don’t follow protocol development closely may have missed. Below, I’m going to try to describe the various points of view from a (mostly) nontechnical perspective and the arguments that have been advanced.1 Then, I’ll briefly conclude with my thoughts on the topic.

  • Thanks, that's nice.

Actually uses Palatino font, I didn't even know that was installed by default.

I may well switch the forum font.

  • The angled tops to tall letters, the way the commas are formed looks really nice but for me, reduces readability. Too much going on.

  • The font we use today is Merriweather. It is the open source version of the Palatino.

I read that blog earlier on a Windows machine and noticed it looked really really nice.

For a laugh, I locally (on Windows) changed the font to Palatino, and again the forum looks really nice.

The font is just a tidge more slender, easier to read.

  • So, bought a second hand iPhone 6 (aware of all the incumbent risks). The phone seems physically in very good nick, and performs well (no lagging/freezing etc). However the battery has been shit from day one. I've tried all the trouble shooting steps that I could find to optimise battery life etc, done hard resets and restores, analysed battery usage to make sure it isn't some errant apps and recalibrated the battery. None of this has helped, and I still have the following problems:
Very slow to charge (6% in 50 minutes)
Very quick to drain (2% in 3 minutes)
Unstable - will shut down, sometimes with lots of battery and sometimes when low. When it restarts it has either significantly lower or significantly higher charge levels than before.

From what I've read this is either a shot battery, a problem with the iOS 10.3 update telling the battery to do strange things, or there's a hardwear problem in something that controls and monitors battery life.

Has anyone had similar problems to this, and if so how did you fix it?

The phone was otherwise a good deal and I'm willing to spend a bit to fix it (eg battery replacement). I've booked a Genius bar appointment but I'd be really grateful for any other advice/experiences.

  • Don't. Pick something designed screen-first if you are going to change it. And don't go for something as fussy as Palatino.

  • Plug it in to a Mac and download coconut battery (Mac app). That will tell you how fucked your battery is.

  • Cheers - will try this now.

Edit - Coconut battery says it can't find an iOS device, even though my device is plugged in on iTunes and trusts the computer.

  • I'd take it to apple. Sounds like a fucked battery.

  • Is there a decent iOS 7 app that can import GPX routes and cache the map for offline viewing? (yeah I know my phone is old).

Was using EveryTrail but it's relaunched, and BikeHub seems to be buggy.

  • OsmAnd is the obvious. No idea about what version it needs though

  • Damn need iOS 8 for that... but I figured out that Google Maps app is pretty good for this.

    1) Download your chosen GPX route
    2) Simplify using https://www.gpsbabel.org if required (eg convert waypoints to a single track)
    3) Create a new map at https://mymaps.google.com/ and import the GPX
    4) Open Your Places on the Google Maps app and click your new map route
    5) Add the relavent area to your Offline Areas cache in Google Maps app

  • Not sure if ViewRanger works in ios7 but you can upload a gpx through the webpage to your routes and then pull it to your phone. Free maps cache and are good. Premium maps are also available. Works OK with Apple Watch as well.

  • Iphone 6s

Once upon a time from the sleep screen I could swipe right on a previewed whatsapp message , press the home button and the phone would unlock and go straight to the swiped message. Not anymore though. Does anybody know how I can re-enable this feature please.

  • Google Assistant is now available in the UK/Europe for iOS. It's an order of magnitude more advanced than Siri but can't be invoked by voice, so not totally hands free. You can type to it though, which is cool.

  • What happens if you press and hold on the message on the screen? On my text messages now, there's no swipe across on the lock screen. Instead I do the iPhone 6/7 harder than normal press on the screen. I think you can change what it does there in the security settings.

  • Should I update my iphone 5S 16gb 9.3.3?

If so, I assume I can only update to 10.3.3, although my phone (and itunes) is telling me that '11' is available?

  • I'm also on a 5S with 9.3.2 and constantly getting nagged to update to 11 here. Reluctant to do so considering the tech is a few years old now....Opinions?

  • iOS 11 dev beta was working fine on our 5s test device, but haven't used it heavily. Hearing reports the production version is still quite buggy though, so might be worth holding off for a bit if you do decide to.

  • Updated it today, via iTunes and everything appears to be OK so far... it initially said it was updating to 10.3.3, but once it was finished, it was saying 11.0.1 was installed.

  • Still all good?

  • Yep, all working fine - although it’s already asked me if I want to update to 11.0.2!

As for speed etc. my phone doesn't seem to be running any slower. Only niggle (and this was happening anyway), is trying to play any videos (mostly on fb) whilst on the move, even with '4G' they take FOREVER to load, so most of the time I don't bother.

  • Might be getting an SE on the next contract for light pic taking duties+, what are some recommended photo apps to use? Or is the in camera stuff fine?
