I'd powdercoat stainless ones over Alu, the Alu go brittle after a few years I feel.

Mine came powder coated from the factory, they still look essentially new after nearly 2 years of being knocked about. No idea how the finish on these compares to if you took your own guards to a powdercoaters though.
