Yep tried that too, and wandering around the local car boot, loads of electrical connectors and plastic clips, the odd section 5 firearm, knocked off lawnmowers and chainsaws.
With a bit of grinding to come i can direct fit mudguard stays to the fork.
I have high flange hubs, the M4 bolt heads just clear the spoke heads, i don't fancy the spokes being ground away :)
With a grind on the stays, thinner washer, and maybe grind the bolt head, should have good clearance.
No photo's as my camera is away at sea at the moment.
