Roots Manuva?

Yeah that guy.
Like a lot of people on the internet, he talks a lot (I type a lot, people would't understand my northern accent) but answers just about any question anyone has ever had on all things Tesla.
Interestingly, in the US at least if your car has a salvage title, Tesla motors appear to not vend parts to you, I would imagine you can only buy certain parts through a dealer when they are also carrying out the work**this would make it impossible for me to own a Tesla, that kind of control would annoy the hell out of me.

Don't underestimate the cost of bringing a 996.1 GT3 up to standard. Would be substantial on top of purchase price.
I'd say the price of getting exactly what you want and being involved in the creation is good value in comparison to just buying fast. Anyone can do that.

• #37055
You can offset some of it with the increase in value though

Managed to clip my wingmirror on something in a hedge (probably a wall) in the Lakes. Mirror is functioning but it isn't pretty.
Any recommendations for where to source a 2011 Legacy nearside mirror from? Google/eBay etc aren't helping.

To a degree, yes - if you stick exactly to the OEM specification.
Take a look at the Manthay models though - faster, more capable than the stock cars, but worth less.

But wouldn't a 996 GT3 touring have had the other engine, that you'd be able to soup up to high hell?
Are you concerned that you're going to spent an awful lot to get this engine as powerful as it can ever get; but it's still not going to meet your expectations of what your GT3 would have been, and you'll have nowhere left to go?You seem to get a bit of stick for this btw - I find it pretty interesting what you're doing, albeit I'd do something different (but then, I guess we'd all do our own thing if we could). Don't stop posting updates :)

I don't know- but that's part of the journey, as it were. However, the GT3 was, for all it's rarity still a series production car, albeit that the 996.1 version was the final car to be built on a separate production line at Weissach (sp?)
What does that mean? Well, my engine is going to end up being designed specifically for my car, my suspension set up, etc.
Is that going to make it better or worse that another car that might be off be shelf? Dunno, but finding that out is part of the fun.

996 GT3 looks wank anyway, big jello mould blob

People said that about the Sierra at the time... who's laughing now? WHO

Tbh it always left me a bit cold too.
On the general judging dammit and his cars; I totally get the logic of picking your car and getting it the way you want. Obviously you could always spend a bit more and get something better as stock, but that's also on paper - irl it's easier said than done.
Bad rust aside, I'm not sure I'd have worried about the body as much until all the other work is done. But that's me.
Anyways the important thing is will it have the bendy spoiler when it's finished?
...ish -
• #37066
No it won't, it will also not have the bumperettes of that US spec car.

Any of the regular posters in this thread handy enough at fabricating, and keen enough, to have a bash at making a plenum that would enclose the trumpets of some ITB's, and connect to the stock airbox feed?

I believe that Crabon fribe is the traditional material

I suspect it'd get a bit wearing after a while, as a day to day proposition - but god the noise this car makes:
-
• #37072
Geez, that's demonic sounding. Must be a straight through system. Revs like banshee.
The worse thing with exhaust systems is eliminating booming and droning. Ruins the driving experience. Screaming at high rpm is fine. -

Ah, so ITBs are back on the table? I've made a custom airbox from GRP, but it was a bit rough and ready:
The plastic bit bolted to the ITBS is the part of the standard Yamaha airbox, the rough looking black bits are the parts of the airbox I made myself. There's an ITG panel filter sandwiched between the two parts, and the hole on the front is connected via a flexi pipe to a NACA duct in the bonnet bulge. If you want something suitably pimptastic, I suspect the easiest way to do it will be a CAD file of the part, and the services of a pattern maker and a laminator. Getting a good cosmetic surface finish with carbon is properly difficult.

Better. (Sound)
Still way off an LM V8 mind.

I can certainly help you with the design and CAD, and i've experience of pattern making for composite layup, but i would recommend getting someone pro to do the layup, trimming and finishing depending how pimp you want to go with it
