So in a moment of uncertainty I bought both of the below for my Canyon Ultimate;
Much difference besides atheistics?
Which do you prefer the look of?

I have both, old ones lhs on my cannondale and will put the new ones rhs on the Isen. The newer ones look big on a wheel (compounded by 650b) but allegedly perform better. Though I have never experienced brake fade due to oil overheating.

Thanks. How long should they last?
I'm bit torn as I prefer the left but the right is the Ultegra one -
• #4155
Definitely the left. The bigger cooling fins on the right are so ugly
-
• #4156
Left in the box almost indefinitely. Lifespan will depend on use and maintenance.

Are Evan's own brand (FWE) pads any good?
No.

Does anyone know if the RS505 flatmount calipers work with the same type of hoses, olives and barbs as the RS685 postmount caliper?
My rear RS685 caliper is fucked so I've ordered a pair of RS505s. I know they need different pads, but is there anything else I need to look out for? This'll be to connect to RS685 levers, ideally without having to recable anything, just new barb and olive on the caliper end and bleed them...
Does that sound do-able?

They are absolutely rubbish, I used a set on London-Edinburgh-London as they were the only ones I could find last minute locally, they were brand new before the ride and were destroyed by the 800km point.

RS685 -> rs505
yes same fitting and same piston size so there should be no problems
-
• #4161
Well that's a relief, thanks :)
Just hoping I've got enough slack on the existing (internally routed) hose to let me snip the end off, fit the olive and barb and still reach the new caliper.

slight correction:
Shimano BR-RS785, not rs685:

No.

They survived 60km of Yorkshire's finest bogs and gritstone puddles with some life to spare: that was the main requirement. I'll purchase some backups from disco pads.

Yes, they're the ones I meant, thanks for the clarification :)

Right bit of a tricky one, perhaps best addressed with some simple questions.
Only shimano make centre lock?
All centre lock are the same fitting? -
• #4166
no
yes -
• #4167
Hmm the plot thickens! Thanks for the quick reply!
-
• #4168
Centerlock is Shimano invention, but other company make centerlock disc.
Only issues is really the thru axles as some need a B.B. tools (the hollowtech one) rather than lockring to fit them.
-
• #4169
Hollowtech. Hollowgram is Cannondale cranks.

• #4170
Hollowtech II 😝

Well the adapter cap for thru axles seems too large and so the rotor / locking nut won't fit.
They are centre lock specific wheels (hope RS4) and the adapter is the right size for the axle so I'm confused.
Will call hope this morning. -

You need to get the lockring that uses a Shimano BB tool to install. The one that comes with rotors, which needs a cassette tool won't clear the thru axle ends. Something like: https://www.merlincycles.com/upgrade-centrelock-15-20mm-lock-ring-for-kinesis-crosslight-wheels-102368.html?

Ah ok thanks for that.
I feel slightly miss sold that the end caps require different lockrung to the standard. I know standard is a dirty word in the bike world but still.
Do I have a valid reason to feel this way? Also asking for a flat mount flat mount adapter, feels like asking for a long weight.

SP thru-axle CL dynamo hubs being one of them.
-
• #4175
Shimano's own thru-axle CL hubs come with the bigger lockring.
The QR CL hubs come with rubber covers over the CL splines in case you're using it in a rim-brake wheel.
same. if there isnt air in the lines it should be fine
