• I could just buy a Mezger, it'd be more straightforward in many ways - but where's the fun in that?

I'm genuinely interested in where we can take the M96, it's an unloved engine in a car that's been unloved itself for the past 20 years - and is only now starting to gain in popularity.

  • I do wonder, if you have the money to do this, why you don't just sell it and buy something faster, but I enjoy reading these updates, and as a former Porsche owner I'm kind of curious to see how it turns out. (I never thought the engine was the Boxster's problem though, more the rest of the car.)

When I owned an SD1 I wondered what kind of performance for the money you could get by putting a Rover 800 turbo engine in an SD1 2000, rather than going down the obvious (and increasingly expensive) V8 route that everyone tells you to do.
And if you did want to put a V8 in it, there's that JLR 5 litre supercharged one that's sort of in the family.

To an extent, because anyone can buy something faster - I enjoy making something.

  • sell it and buy something faster

Well once you break down the £/hrs used, you could prob rent something properly silly somewhere it can be driven to it's limit.

Then just use a cheaper vehicle for your main transport. A bicycle perhaps?

I gave this some thought whilst doing some laps of Regents Park this evening.

The car I've always wanted (well, the 911 I've always wanted) is the 996.1 GT3, but: if there had been an option back in the day for a GT3 touring I'd have taken that over the aero-kit which came as standard, and I'd also have picked a cab over a coupe because they're fun.

So - given that I want a 996 GT3 touring, cabriolet, and that was never offered by Porsche (quite possibly for extremely good reasons) I'm making one.
