  • Beater/not get stolen machine.

  • Sounds like it'll tick those boxes. I'd still put on comfy granny bars and some sort of front brake.

  • narrow wide, yes

  • Not sure how good of an idea spraying a seatpost is tbh, wouldn't sanding off the anodizing be easier?

  • no no the bike!

  • ah sorry, figured you were talking about the post. Sure, you could respray it if you really don't like the colour (which I'd advise against doing, simply because I like the colour).

  • Ditched the drops, swapped the V1 forks for some carbon ones and even serviced the Mack hubs (which I have been postponing for like 2 years now). Runs muj bueno now.

  • The dude abides.

  • Fista Lebowski is a nice touch!

  • This is a very complicated case @Tijs & @Sig_Arlecchino. You know, a lotta ins, a lotta outs, lotta what-have-yous.

  • Hope you enjoy mate! I love mine to bits!

  • That Brooklyn is ace.

Slightly random question - does anyone know if it's possible to make a frame with stainless steel tubes and normal steel lugs?

    Cheers

  • You can certainly weld steel to stainless steel, I'm not sure about brazing for lugs

  • Sure, like @PhilDAS said you could weld steel to stainless steel. However lugs are normally soldered (most of the time called brazing) to tubing, but for stainless steel you'll need a solder with a high silver content instead of brass (making the term "brazing" wrong here).

  • thanks both... so, possible in theory: good news!

Do you think it's the kind of project that most frame builders can manage, or might I end up having to find a frame builder who's willing to experiment a bit?

  • might I end up having to find a frame builder who's willing to experiment a bit?

Google "lugged 953" and you'll find a few builders who are already past the experimental stage. Any 753 certified builder will already be familiar with silver solder.

  • Nice one, thanks @mdcc_tester.
Was thinking about asking Varhonna seeing as they're a five minute walk from my door.
Winston must've worked with 753 at Roberts.

  • Recently picked up this gawdy little number from @adam77

    It's a Dawes Quest, 1989 — a slouchy 531 tubed, parts bin special. 1x10 SRAM

Been riding it this week, lots of fun of fun but feels like I need to raise the bars. I've forked out on a flashy new, mug dangle points Velo Orange Cigne stem which I'm struggling to get to play nicely with the current stem converter (not enough purchase via single pinch bolt.). VO sell their own knurled stem converter for ~£40. I imagine it will be alright with a long stem expander bolt going through stem through to stem converter expander ...

Still to come; work around for stem, fit guards, all-road friendly tyres.

    Ensue crappy phone pics ...

  • wow, nice work! looks amazing. And that swan-neck stem... totally jealous now.

  • I guess a bit more old school frame builders will be into this. Try not to approach a builder with less than 5 years experience. Here in the Netherlands I know Blacksmith and St. Joris have experience with silver soldering stainless to carbon steel.

  • 853 is far from stainless

Yeah, lack of concentration on my part. I meant 953
