It actually seems difficult to imagine a much more respectful protest gesture, if you're going to make one, than 'taking a knee'. I dug into it a bit and in american football, it is done (a) while listening to the coach (b) when when opposing player is badly injured in order to force play to stop. Seems pretty polite to me - hardly a black power salute.
Also, teams used to not come onto the field until after the anthem. Apparently military sponsored the change about 8 years ago specifically as a recruitment thing.
