• chain drop, not enough spring tension in RD to retain the chain, my experience wasnt with etap but with 6870 and a narrow wide ring, I also did the spring tension hack that you can do with shimano RDs and this was all bumpy road .. you really need a clutched mech to run 1x

    funnily enough I was riding a 1X etap bike around between posting that comment and your response. I've ridden 6870 1X too. You just need to run a tighter chain, which electronic groups and especially eTap prefer anyway. It's fine.

  • Yeah I ran a tighter chain too .. possibly 2 links shorter than what shimano says so the cage was wayyyy forward on the lowest gear, almost horizontal.

    Maybe because my B tension was all the way done .. I was using 11-36 in mid cage (that officially supports 32t largest cog) and the drops would happen in the higher gear always so the 11t and 12t. Just sold the mech and got XT. No chain slap and sharper shifting.
