• The reality is that people think selfishly. Until cycling becomes a quicker/better way to commute people will not swap to the bike. Basically you need peak time grid lock.
    Stevenage being a new town has relatively free flowing spacious road compared to existing town and cities.
    Even the Dutch made the centre of Amsterdam virtually unnavigable by car through a series of no entries and one way roads as well as very limited parking. Suddenly cycling make sense.
    The fact that I can commute faster then the tube is a major factor in my cycling regularly.
    7/7 bombing also made the tube less attractive, if it's sardine packed carriages weren't enough of a deterant, together with cycle work scheme at the same time meant it made sense for the lot of people.
    It's not all about infrastructure, it helps once the momentum has built up as people transfer to bikes.
