The other driver facing trial is, judging from his name, British. Most of the dead were from India. So, yes, the initial article does suggest that, but I'm curious to see how things pan out. Someone without a valid licence shouldn't have been allowed behind the wheel of a heavy vehicle, but somehow I suspect that's not the angle most are going to take. I mean, the judge has already said "Of course his employers weren't aware and they are not to blame", which is probably correct in law as it currently stands, but begs the question why the law is so lax about letting disqualified people get behind the wheel - shouldn't hauliers be required to make sure their drivers are up-to-date legit?

Re comments on news sites on stories about traffic accidents - looking at the timeline here http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tees-35977100 , it seems like there was a decision in February last year that basically required news sites not to have below-the-line comments or to post links to social media where there was a case that was likely to go to trial (or that actually went to trial). Which came a little late for the chap who posted unwisely here, but perhaps explains why comments are generally turned off for that kind of incident now.

I remember reading an article on this in the last month but can't find it but was saying it's a massive issue in the haulage industry with many drivers carrying on working following disqualification, apparently it's rampant and companies turn a blind eye as the responsibility is on the driver. Wasn't just hgv, was white van couriers as well.

Looks like a bucket of some kind of powder with fairy lights to detonate it. Judging by the fact that the bucket and carrier bag it was in are intact, in situ and barely smouldering it looks like this is a failed bomb at best. Could have been a nasty flash fire though.

Hope nobody has bad flash burns.

Pretty much any powder will burn vigorously or explode if compressed or contained firmly. Apart from the obvious candidate of gunpowder, you can make bombs with custard powder or milk powder if you wanted to.
