Probably 10 minutes of puking for me based on the synopsis. Human rights is not a religion...but yep it's good to try other views. I'll try it.

Though he's correct rights have to be claimed...I somehow don't think it'll include a strong view that therefore legal aid must be available to all :p

I dunno, I think Scruton is useful to listen to inasmuch as he does give a coherent view of conservatism as a philosophy. I disagree with him on almost everything mind you, but he does at least provide a coherent picture of something to disagree with. His point regarding human rights (from what I can remember by watching previous videos of him) is the fairly standard:

"Having a right to do X without being impeded is fundamentally different from having the right to Y, where Y requires the government or someone else to provide something for you."

Scruton never seemed to be off BBC R4, (at least in the mornings), in '80s & '90s when I was driving a lot of motorway miles. His ostensibly contrarian views meant he was the go-to guy to argue against anything that criticised any aspect of Thatcherism, (and the later Major adminstration).

I agree with you, especially with regard to the point about christ. Even if it's historically accurate to say that christianity has been the driving force behind "European" views, it's largely irrelevan now.

I think it's a worthwhile to make the distinction about rights though, since the job of modern government appears to be largely to implement the second type of rights (e.g., food, healthcare, shelter etc.) at minimal cost to the public (or at least at a cost that the public will accept).

I tend to find the "inherited a lot of money" tories less objectionable than the "self-made man" tories. The former just miss the fact that not everyone has the resources they've enjoyed; the latter misses the fact that not everyone has the luck they've enjoyed, and even if they have got where they were through simple hard graft, not everyone can succeed like they have, because there's simply not that much success to go round.

Really glad my relatives are in Canada right now and not in Englewood (south of Tampa on the west coast of FL). Things don't look good :(

Went out cycling today with a friend who is from Florida, he spoke with his mum last night they packed what they could in the car and are driving north He thinks two days driving to get to where they want to be.

Obviously you're entitled to your views, but IMHO you couldn't be more wrong.

You shouldn't write off everything someone says based on whether you like or agree with them. You'll end up in a eco chamber, narrow your thinking, and will struggle to understand people who hold different views.

You should give it a listen, as tbh most of your 2nd paragraph agrees with the principles he's laid out.

Scruton has no morals.

The latter criticized the World Health Organization's campaign against smoking, arguing that transnational bodies should not seek to influence domestic legislation because they are not answerable to the electorate.

Whilst multinational corporations remain free to influence domestic policy. Oh the irony.

Scruton is a fifth rate philosopher and a right wing rabble rouser. I'd rather listen to Steps than hear any shit he has to say.

Scruton is peddling the widespread and completely bollocks idea that Western democracy and human rights ideals are a) unique and b) founded on Christianity. Bullshit. Western countries became more tolerant and democratic in direct proportion to the weakening influence of Christianity. The philosphical principles which pushed back religion and placed focus on individual rights and the power of a secular society came from many different sources around the world and across history. Most Christian churches have opposed social progress every single step of the way.

When the UK was a genuinely Christian country, we were burning and torturing heretics. It's only very recently (in historical terms) that the Church of England retreated from demonising scientists and philosophers and retreated to become the shit social club it is now.
