Dynamo Lights

  • Going round in circles and spending too much time buying these lights.

I'm after a B&M Lumotec Lyt Plus that works with a bottle dynamo. The only place I've found a bottle specific is SJS which ends up being almost £35.

Some others say "for hub dynamos" and the cheapest easily available specifically says "Works with hub dynamos only":

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Busch-Muller-Lumotec-Lyt-BN-Plus-LED-Bike-Front-Light-for-HUB-DYNAMO-20-LUX-81-/222552661434?hash=item33d12c1dba:m:m-CutzDAAf0TqSM8i3Lm33g

it's been a while since I looked into it, but I thought all hubs and bottles output the same (excluding SON).

Am I missing something? Despite liking SJS I'd rather save a tenner if I can at the mo.

  • I bought the cheapest/lowest output one and it worked with a bottle dynamo.
    Shouldn't matter I thought?

  • Says LYT LED BN plus.

  • Recommendations for an inexpensive dynamo light for Shimano hub dynamo? Must have standlight and terminals to connect a rear light.

Currently have a B&M IQ Fly but it has succumbed to water ingress and no longer works (but happily continues to send power to the rear light terminals.)

  • Axa blueline 30lux if its only for bikelanes, or 50lux for whole night setup

  • just got a B&M EYC, really tiny and plenty of punch. Also, doesn't flicker too much at low speeds.

  • Thanks for the suggestions, forgot to say that it's only for commuting bike inside London although occasionally it may see Richmond Park after dusk occasionally.

    Will check out those two...

  • Axa Blueline 30 is a good light imo!

  • In a recent purchase of dynamo hub wheelset with a set of B&M light I also received a Shimano Overcharge Protector for the rear light. A bit of research suggests it's not needed due to the lights being LED as opposed to a bulb. Can anyone confirm?

  • Never used mine. Always put somewhere in the messpartbox.
    Never needed

  • Thank you!

  • The cables on my front light are not long enough to stretch from the front of my pizza rack, back to the fork leg and then down to the dynamo hub.

The light is a B&M where the cables are fixed inside the light so can't simply replace like on my IQ Luxos U.
I was wondering what the LFGSS recommended extension solution was. Some kind of water sealed banana plug?

  • Solder or crimp connectors + heat shrink tubing

  • Thanks. Axa Blueline 30 lux Steady ordered.

(For reference, the base model doesn't provide a connection for the rear lights but the Steady and Switch models do.)

Found it on eBay for about £20 (inc postage) which was cheaper than I could get it elsewhere (many places offering it for <£15 but charging huge P&P).

Rear light connections on fly leads seems a nicer idea than the B&M IQ Fly which had spade terminals on the back of the light itself and would often work loose.

  • Anyone know what size those spades are on axa, b+m etc lights? Want to order a few and assume that ebay will be cheaper than repackaged ones from the dynamo companies.

  • they are pricey at $350 tho!

  • Awesome, just ordered a shed load from aliexpress!

  • The first batch of Sinewave Beacon lights have just been finished and shipped, so hopefully I should get mine in about a week.
I'll update once I've had a chance to test it out.
I've got high hopes for it.

    How are you finding it?

I've got one on the way to me for a customer's bike.

  • Anyone here installed a B&M Lumotec Lyt Plus or similar.

    The back looks like this:

The lamp being replaced only has 2 wires whereas the B&M has 4 potential wires.

    Any good guides or suggestions?

    Cheers.

  • The dyno wires should go on "IN". "OUT" is the rear light feed. I guess the brown wire should go on "+" and the other one on "-" seeing as it seems to be the ground wire.

Is that a bottle dynamo installed at the moment? (Asking because I dunno how/if these work with LED lights)

  • Aren't the extra connectors to run a tail light off? [Edit: just saw @cgg said they were - just put a bit of tape across them or something if you're using a battery rear]

Bottle should be OK with LED lights incidentally.

  • whats my option to mount a front light if my (carbon) forks dont have a front brake hole (disc forks)?
