160mm is fine on the fork, you just have to be careful when putting the wheel in so it doesn't scratch the fork, although I suspect this will apply to 140mm too.

160mm with flatmount spyre fits in the frame just. Slight issue with 001 at the moment, but should be up and running next week.

@coldharbour Any idea of the thru-axle recommended torque? Can't find info on the columbus site.

I've just emailed to ask, I've always used the DT swiss skewer so never been an issue.

Full disclosure, which is the point of this thread really. We did a stupid thing, which was test everything with 2 prototypes, ironed out issues, then changed something and didn't double check it hadn't caused new issues.

You will remember earlier in the thread the fixture I used to weld the brake bosses onto the drop outs. These are designed specifically for the drop outs, and are milled to fit perfectly in the drop outs. Taken together, there should be no reason for the bosses to not be perfectly aligned, but somewhere between a pile of bits and painted frame, they have ended up a few degrees out on number one. Having checked the 20 odd others, it's either a weird freak, or weird build up of paint. It would not be an issue at all if this had been included in QR check list, as would have been caught and faced, but this was left off, we wrongly assumed this was going to be a fit and forget part. It could have been resolved qucikly by me in the workshop, but @chiroshi is based in Switzerland, so we have sent our facing tool to them.

Due to the very small mating surface on this brake mounting system, face consistency is very important. I know this, I always mask forks, I was just stupid and did that 'this is designed to work with this, i put it together right I will be fine, brain disengage'.

TLDR: Frame bosses should have been faced, they werent, they will be for everyone else.

Looking forward to using an expensive tool that I would otherwise have no reason to use! Harriet is not so happy (only because she's so excited to ride the bike), but it looks like it should be finally done before our trip to christen the bike at the Madonna del Ghisallo chapel next weekend!

As it's using the e-thru standard, I've gone with Shimano's recommendation of 5-7Nm. I'm terrified of stripping the threads in the fork, or rounding the allen key hole as thru axles are not cheap to replace! I've had to dremel a slot to remove a stripped thru axle before, nervous job! It kinda weirds me out that there's no locking system to stop the axle just unthreading itself as well.

Why is it not an issue with the DT skewer?

If I get frame before October, I can wait until then when the current Ultegra Grouppo is currently scheduled for.

For the flatmount calipers, do we know what length bolts we need for the rear? Aren't they a function of the thickness of the chainstay?

The bolts are adjustable.

Because my experience with my CAAD12 and an RS805 caliper was that the fixing bolts need to be ordered specifically to the thickness of the chainstay.

Here is a screenshot from the R9170 manual which shows the same thing.

Now that Wiggle have refused my order for a current Ultegra flat mount brake calliper I need to find a replacement - is anyone having success in this area?

That's why I ordered the newer ultegra, as apparently the current/old calipers have been discontinued.

Maybe phone around and see who has any left in stock?

I actually have an RS805 but it was on the rear- can it just be put on the front with the correct mount?

Yes. Like the one attached to the caliper in the photos above.

Therefore the next question is where to buy the mount?
