• Contact Kirk at Pacenti he is quick to respond.

Get stans tape of the correct width and put two layers onto the rim. (You can try one layer but generally two are required.)

  • Done, thanks. I find it amazing that this info is nowhere on the internet, although I note that SL25s have been replaced with the Forzas (I believe due to cracking issues, but mine have been great - I do weigh 60kg and ride daintily though).

Having played around further with the rubber rim tape loop with embedded valve standalone tape is definitely the answer. As soon as I have an answer from Kirk I'll buy the required bits.

  • As these rims have been used, do I really need to do the whole cleaning them with isopropyl alcohol thing before taping them? Kept seeing these posts from MTBers about using IPA while fitting their tubeless tyres and I thought they meant beer...

  • Of course it was not my intention to pull the valve through Malcolm! But that is what happened. Second go-around with fresh double wrap of VAR 21 mm tape did not seal either so that's one very nice wheel sidelined until I summon the resolve to try again.

  • Cleaning is always a good idea when using any kind of adhesive, especially one you want to be airtight.

I'd go for tape ~2mm wider than quoted rim width so it just curves up the edges, though on wider rims mtbs often use narrower tape that just covers the center channel.

  • Just used a baby wipe on the last pair - gorilla tape don't give a shit about a perfectly clean surface, or not.

    Yellow tape is fussier though.

Width err on the side of being too wide. Even if it rolls up the side and even out of the rim it doesn't seem to matter.

  • I'd go for tape ~2mm wider than quoted rim width

Thanks - ~2mm wider than the internal or external diameter?

  • OK that's good to know, ta. Yellow tape is better though right?

  • Gorilla is cheap and useful for all sorts of things.

  • 2mm wider than internal.

    I just bought a roll of: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tesa-Tape-4289-no-tubes-rim-tape-complete-roll-25mm-wide-x-66-metres-long-/162354590164?epid=519694448&hash=item25cd1671d4:g:8wYAAOSwpdpVZtc~

Same as Stans stuff but much cheaper. I've found buying a 10m roll which rim tape is often sold in will just get you a double layer on two rims. This should last me a while!

  • This is academic anyway as any air I try to put in them just escapes into the atmosphere - the beads of the tyre are nowhere near the rim.

Have you not been reading the Adventures of Hippy and the Tubeless?

Push the tyre down over the valve while you inflate. It catches air and et voila inflates.

The rim strip being too close is another issue. Can you push it away from the rim hook?

  • Pacenti and tape have been mentioned a few times in this thread (Stans and Gorilla used). You can search individual threads with the search box on the right -->

  • I bought a 1L tub of it from Maplins. It's an expensive way to get it but it did the job.

  • What strength do people recommend for IPA? Go for the 100% good stuff or is 70% first aid stuff alright?

  • I can't comment on actual use but it makes sense to get as pure as possible if the idea is to clean something leaving no residue. It depends on cost of both though I guess. Maplins 400ml spray was about 12 quid so I bought the 1L for 14 quid

  • Dunno. I've used both. Gorilla seems more tolerant and is easier to come by but apparently it's slightly porous so uses a bit of sealant.

  • Given that I can get away with using a baby wipe...

Some mtb guys just slap duck tape over whatever rim strip was already in there. Probably wouldn't recommend that but you don't need surgically clean.

  • Awesome, from noobless toob to giving advice in a couple of days.

I too buy large containers of isopropyl alcohol- good for cleaning up after bleeding brakes too.

  • Not even a noob. Literally never ridden tubeless.

  • Still, you can't argue with my answers coz they've all come from you idiots. :P

  • When I got my wheels with factory fitted tape it went right to the edge but not up the sides, then again they've got a machine putting it on...

  • You are now like Scoble five years ago! Giving advice from what you have read on the interwebz.

  • I have a Pacenti which was taped from JRA. I think the tape goes a little way up the sides. Presume they have humans doing it.
