• My girlfriend has a mid 2012 MBP and it needs some upgrades due to the large image files she often works with.

While I'm putting in an SSD and bumping the RAM, If I put a second HD in a caddy, can it be used (solely) as the drive for time machine to save faffing around connecting external? Which she will never remember to do.

  • You can but it strikes me as a slightly daft idea... External drive(s) protect you from theft, drive failure and probably loads of other things I haven't thought of... Just put two SSDs in, I've got 1.5Tb in my late 2011 MBP now and it still flies like shit off a shovel...

  • Didn't think of protecting against theft. Drive failure surely applies to an external used as time machine too?

There will be another external drive used to do a manual period backup of really important stuff which I will do for her- I'm mainly just trying to save myself having to keep reminding her to do a TM update, or dealing with the shitstorm (and 15 hours trying to recover what I could) that happened last time she had HD failure.
