• My girlfriend has a mid 2012 MBP and it needs some upgrades due to the large image files she often works with.

While I'm putting in an SSD and bumping the RAM, If I put a second HD in a caddy, can it be used (solely) as the drive for time machine to save faffing around connecting external? Which she will never remember to do.

  • You mean to use the hdd that you will have taken out from the Mac, as an external drive? Or do you mean to replace the dvd drive with a second hdd and use that for time machine?

Yes with 1st option, no idea with 2nd option.

Time Machine is essentially a programme that saves stuff onto some external memory, so any hard drive will do.

  • You can but it strikes me as a slightly daft idea... External drive(s) protect you from theft, drive failure and probably loads of other things I haven't thought of... Just put two SSDs in, I've got 1.5Tb in my late 2011 MBP now and it still flies like shit off a shovel...
