I wonder if anyone actually tested that position? Could it just serve to mess up the air over the base bar?

I'd imagine he has:

I guess the assumption is it's better to have dirty air going over the base bar than dirt air going into the void behind the levers.

There's nothing of those levers. Mine are chunkier... like the rider.
