  • JF Wilson early 70s frame.
    ST - 58.5cm
    TT-56.5cm
    Rear spacing =126mm.

    Tange H/S and Shimano BB
Two tiny dings to the top tube which are almost unnoticeable. (See 2nd photo and look in the middle of the tube to the right, they are very small)
Paint work is very bright but is crazed /orange peel in places from age. The colour is a kind of mix of red /orange & and a kind of copper.
Minor rust and scratches /scuffs consistent with use and the frame being around 40 years old.
The frame has great Head tube chrome lugs which are tarnished and rusty but nothing too bad.

JF Wilson have confirmed that this frame is Reynolds 531 and built in the early 70s.
The Wilson website is a great read -

    £175 posted in the UK.
    Thanks

  • Woah, love that. Good job it's too big for me. Not stumbled on Wilson, will have a read.

  • BB is in good order it would appear and feels good but has the non drive side cup not fitted all the way into the BB and the lock nut fitted against the BB shell which shows 2-3mm of the cup thread. (I don't know whether this is an issue)

  • When I asked them about the frame history, the reply I got was -
That is a very very nice JFW frame, circa early 1970's, well worth more than any of the disposable carbonfire frames that the pros are paid to ride...and the ride is better!

  • carbonfire

Must get a sticker made up for my lad's PlanetX...

  • give them a call first. I live round the corner and have only ever seen it open once.

  • Ah, cheers, will do.

  • Non drive side BB cup pictures. Hopefully you will see what I was trying to explain on the listing. The BB appears in order with no issues.

  • Didn't get to Wilsons, ran out of time (flying visit), but did manage to bag this and bring it home! Only a Dawes but nice and complete...

  • Looks like a Carlton Flyer ordered with Capella lugs ?

  • Sideshowbob's Wilson?

  • Yep,. The Wilson frame. Carlton were very proud of their lugs and used their own designs such as the Capella and Crespera on their frames only.

When Carlton closed in the 80's they flogged off surplus stuff and there is the odd (only one I know of) frame from the 80's with Carlton lugs but not made by Carlton.

  • That's interesting @midlife and searching Capella lugs online brings up Carlton frames. Looking at the Wilson website, I cannot see any obvious link between the two frame builder's but then the two locations were only 20 miles apart but who knows. Any further information is welcome.

  • Me too, very nice

  • BB serial number
G8161 & 11 in the middle of the shell.
